Georgia Williams Disappearance: Man Held

Police say they are gravely concerned for the safety of a policeman's daughter whose friend has been arrested on suspicion of kidnap.

Georgia Williams has not been seen since she left her home in Wellington, Shropshire, at around 7.30pm on Sunday.

She is described as white, 5ft 3in tall and of slim build with red hair.

Detectives believe she was in the company of a 22-year-old man who was arrested on Wednesday morning at an unnamed hotel in Glasgow.

"They were friends, but they were not boyfriend and girlfriend, let me make that clear," Superintendent Nav Malik, of West Mercia Police told reporters.

"We know she may have met him on Sunday, and he may have been the last person to see her," he added.

A semi-detached house in Avondale Road, Wellington, which neighbours said was lived in by a Jamie Reynolds, has been searched by forensics officers.

One woman, who declined to be named and lives nearby, said the man's parents were not at the house when police arrived as they were abroad on holiday.

She described the man as "a polite and pleasant lad".

"He went to school with my son and is a nice lad," she said.

"It's just a shock to see the police here."

Another neighbour, who also declined to give her name, said police had arrived yesterday morning and broke down the door to get inside.

"They were in the white overalls, and searching inside and also taking photos in the garden," she said.

A silver Toyota van allegedly driven by the suspect was tracked from Wellington to Oswestry in Shropshire before travelling to Rhyl, Chester, Cumbria and then on to Glasgow.

Police have appealed to Georgia to get in touch.

"If you hear these appeals, please contact us. You are not in any trouble, we simply wish to make sure you are safe and well," Superintendent Malik said.

Georgia’s father is a Detective Constable in the local force. He and the rest of the family are said to be devastated.

Georgia's last known Twitter message, posted before she went missing read: "Worst night's sleep in ages. Need sleep. Stuff on mind. Now can't get back to sleep."

Superintendent Malik urged witnesses or any members of the public with information to come forward.

Raising concerns about the teenager's welfare, he also urged witnesses or any members of the public with information to come forward.

"A police operation has led to the arrest of a man in Glasgow but we have so far not been able to locate Georgia," he said.

"We fear she may have come to harm ... She has never gone missing before, it is completely out of character...

"She is a former head girl, very bright with a very bright future ahead of her.

"We are keen to hear from anyone who has seen Georgia since Sunday afternoon, or has any information about her whereabouts or movements over the past few days."

"I am concerned for Georgia's welfare and am asking for the public's help to try and locate her."

Anyone with information is asked to contact West Mercia Police on 101 or 0300 333 3000.

Georgia's friends have set up a Facebook page in order to publicise her disappearance.
