Gifts galore for William and Kate on overseas trip

LONDON (AP) — The new Duchess of Cambridge was showered with gifts — from head to toe — on her first overseas visit as a member of the royal family.

Palace records show that Canadian officials and well-wishers gave the former Kate Middleton hats, tartan and peacock fascinators and three pairs of shoes during her visit to the country with Prince William last year.

The couple's office, Clarence House, has published lists of all the gifts the pair received on trips in 2011.

William's haul included shirts, cufflinks, a pilot's helmet from a unit of the Royal Canadian Air Force and a Canadian Ranger patrol knife.

Governor General David Johnson — the representative in Canada of William's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II — gave the couple a quilt, while Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper presented them with a woolen blanket, a framed photograph, souvenir edition Canadian magazines, two jackets, a bottle of whiskey and a Canadian flag.

A gift from Canada's health minister was arguably more practical — two mosquito traps.

The royal couple, who married last April at Westminster Abbey in London, visited Canada and the U.S. between June 20 and July 10.

The American leg of the tour took in California, where they received an iPad from Gov. Jerry Brown and four coasters from the sheriff-coroner of Santa Barbara.

During a solo visit to Australia and New Zealand in March, William was given items including a papier mache model of a cassowary — a large flightless bird — and a jar of the savory spread Vegemite.

Some gifts came from officials and dignitaries, others from unnamed individuals — everything from a "selection of baseball caps" to rubble from buildings destroyed in the Christchurch, New Zealand earthquake.

A palace official said Wednesday all gifts are registered and then either placed in storage or put on display in royal residences.

An iPad and 4 coasters? How lame. Those will end up in dark room with the stupid iPod Barry gave the Queen.

People gives the gifts out of respect. Everyone know that they can afford almost anything they want. Plus the gifts reflect where they have been.

Question - why cannot the gifts be used by them for personal use, why in storage or display? certainly its obvious to me that the kind of items given were given with the intention for their personal use.

I heard if they go back to CA they’re going to give them Nancy Pelosi and Maxine Waters. They don’t want to break up a set.

Everyone complaining that they're rich and don't need gifts. They are still people. I'm sure the Prince could buy a ranger knife, but the one given to him by members of the unit makes it special.

It's funny all the negative feedback here. You people are generally miserable. Be happy for once, not all the negative comments! If you life was not so boring and maybe you had something going on you would see good in the world.
I like to hang around and socialize with happy and positive people, not people who are always negative. Nobody likes that.
Try it and maybe you will make new friends and your life wont be so negative. Count on it.

Its not your surroundings (location) that makes one happy, its what is in your mind. I lived in many places my friend. No matter where I have lived (Vegas, California, and over seas. As I said most people are not happy with thier lives and they must put others down in order to justify thier misery.
        Freedom comes from within.
I sense your playfull tone and look it as a positive thing. Carry on my friend.

This world wouldn't recognize true royalty if it came here and said, "Here I am." And funny thing is, true royalty actually did that, and the world crucified Him.

If they had visited the White House, Obama would have given them an iPod with his speeches on it and a DVD that is not formatted to play in the UK.......kind of worthless......like him.

Let's hope the iPad doesn't go into storage or on display. Storing it would be silly, since it is useful and fun. Putting it on display would be silly, since most people knows what one looks like. Let's hope they use it.

If I were the Duchess of Cambridge, I would demand Lindt vanilla truffles as a gift since it would be under $10. It would not go to waste in some storage room somewhere because I would make good used of it. It would also save the poor commoners some pocket money in going beyond their expense.

If it was a Masserati or something of tremendous value, it would be interesting. Otherwise, these "gifts" are just tokens, a nice gesture, some very thoughtful.
