Hales Helps England To Windies Win

Alex Hales hit the highest ever score by an England player in a Twenty20 international as he helped England to victory over the West Indies at Trent Bridge.

The one-off match survived the weather and the visitors won the toss - choosing to bat.

Dwayne Smith was their star man, hitting 70 runs - including five sixes - before being caught by Craig Kieswetter from Steven Finn's bowling.

Dwayne Bravo hit 54 not out as the West Indies finished on 172 for four wickets.

England suffered an early setback in their innings as Kieswetter was caught on just three runs.

It was his opening partner Alex Hales who was the highlight - hitting four sixes and six fours as he reached 99 runs. With just one more run needed to become the first England Twenty20 centurion, he was bowled by Ravi Rampaul.

Despite leaving the field with a look of disbelief, the 23-year old had shown the crowd he can be a long-term replacement for Kevin Pietersen, who retired from limited overs cricket earlier this year.

Ravi Bopara, who had shared a 159 run stand with Hales, was out himself in the final over for 59.

With four runs needed from the final two balls, Eoin Morgan hit the winning runs as England sealed a seven-wicket win.
