Helen Mirren To Play Queen Again On Stage

Dame Helen Mirren is to reprise her role as the Queen, but this time on stage.

The actress, who won an Oscar for her royal role in the 2006 film The Queen, will play the monarch in a new play in the West End.

She will star in The Audience, penned by the film's writer Peter Morgan and based on the head of state's weekly audience with the Prime Minister.

The play imagines the strictly confidential meetings between the Queen and the country's political leaders from Winston Churchill to David Cameron.

It will be directed by Billy Elliot film-maker Stephen Daldry and will run at the Gielgud Theatre from February.

Mirren's role in the movie portrays Queen Elizabeth II struggling with her reaction to the mass outpouring of grief following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales in a car accident in Paris.

The royal family decide they should remain hidden behind closed doors at Balmoral, largely for the sake of Diana's sons William and Harry, but this provokes a furious outcry from the grieving public and they are forced to appear in front of the cameras.

The tragedy also puts pressure on newly elected prime minister Tony Blair, who constantly tries to convince the monarchy to address the public.

Mirren picked up best actress gongs at the Academy Awards and the Baftas for her lead role in the film.

The Queen also won the Bafta for best film.
