Conspiracy websites once again proclaimed the end of life on Earth this week as a huge asteroid hurtled towards Earth.

The 3,000-foot-wide asteroid, 2014-YB35 is passing Earth today - but is in no danger of hitting us.

Despite what rumour-mongers Before It’s News suggest, the asteroid 2014-YB35 won’t wipe out life as we know it.

Nor is NASA on ‘high alert’.

In fact, it’s not even that close – it’s going to sail past Earth 11.6 lunar distances away. That’s 2.8 million miles.

It reached its closest point at 6.21AM this morning, and is now flying on into space.

It’s far further away than the last near-miss asteroid in January - although it’s still close enough to offer scientists a pretty good view.

The space rock has been observed by scientists at the Goldstone Observatory in California’s Mojave Desert, in hopes of learning more about its composition.

The panic sparked by Before It’s News briefly spread onto other, more legitimate news sites - before other conspiracy websites chimed in to explain it was rubbish.

Before It’s News also suggested that the appearance of the asteroid was in some way tied to the reactivation of the Large Hadron Collider this week.

NASA hasn’t issued any kind of warning, simply because the rock is absolutely miles away.
