Huhne And Ex-Wife 'Should Be Prosecuted'

Police believe Energy Secretary Chris Huhne and his ex-wife should both be prosecuted over claims she accepted penalty points on his behalf, it is reported.

Detectives think they have given the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) enough evidence to charge him with speeding, according to The Times.

Officers have also recommended he and his former partner Vicky Pryce should be charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice, the newspaper added.

Police began their probe after claims emerged she accepted penalty points on her licence after her husband was caught by a speed camera on the M11.

The speeding offence is alleged to have taken place in 2003 when the then-MEP was driving home from Stansted Airport after flying back from the European Parliament.

Police first sent a report to the CPS in July this year. After requests from CPS lawyers, they sent further reports in August, September, and October.

CPS lawyers have to be sure that there is a realistic chance of prosecution, and that it is in the public interest to proceed.

They are waiting for a decision from the Appeal Court which, on January 20, will decide whether or not The Sunday Times newspaper has to hand over emails from Ms Pryce.

Liberal Democrat Mr Huhne - who left Ms Pryce for another woman last year - has denied the allegations.

Earlier this month, he told Sky News: "I would love to see this cleared up as soon as possible. I want to see the CPS get to the bottom of this", adding "I am confident that will clear things up."

Essex Police said: "We simply await the outcome of the Appeal Court process following which the CPS will be in a position to make a decision regarding whether or not charges will be brought. We have no further comment to make."

However it seems clear that some officers think it is time for the CPS to act.

A spokesman for the CPS said: "We have asked Essex Police to provide us with further material in relation to this case.

"This is now subject to a court hearing involving Essex Police and the Sunday Times which is due to be heard in January."
