Video: New gizmo turns iPhone into robot tank

Apple's iPhone can work as a hi-fi system, an HD video machine, and a rather unreliable sat-nav - but now a new add-on allows it to become a robot.

Romo is a remote-controlled robot - with tank track - where iPhone sits in it as the machine's 'brain'.

A face on the machine smiles at users as it drives around, and it has a faint look of Doctor Who's arch-foe Davros.

The motorised machine can be controlled from other iDevices such as iPhones and iPads, and also from PCs via web browsers.

'It's fast - really fast,' boast its creators.

'When connected with any iOS device, Romo becomes a friendly robotic avatar that wanders about your home or office.'

Having self-promoted the machine via their website, the makers sold 2,000 Romos in four months.

The machine was initially funded via the KickStarter site, but has now secured $5 million in funding from Sequoia Capital.

Users can see through Romo's 'eyes', drive him using a pointer on screen, and display customised faces on screen.

It will be on sale via America's Neiman Marcus catalogue this Christmas.

Romotive are now seeking to add more functions to the robot.
