One of the most popular places in the metro Detroit area to go ice fishing is Lake Saint Clair. Lake Saint Clair is an enormous lake that is located about 45 minutes north of the city of Detroit. If you are an avid ice fisherman or you are a brand new ice fisher, you need to check it out and see what you are going to be looking into.
You really have a lot of different options when it comes to ice fishing in the metro Detroit area. Be sure that you are taking your time and that you find out what area of the lake that you are going to want to be fishing on. There are all kinds of different areas on the lake to fish, tournaments to take advantage of, and winter carnivals.
Ice Fishing Equipment
If you are going to head up to Lake Saint Clair, you need to make sure that you have the right equipment. There are a lot of people there that will set up a permanent shanty for the season, but you may want to just set it up for the day. Make sure that you find out what you want and either get a portable one or a permanent one. You are also going to need an ice auger to break up the ice and make your fishing hole. Lastly, you are going to need the right fishing equipment which you can either rent at one of the stores up there or that you can purchase.
Ice Fishing Safety
You have to make sure that it is safe for you to be ice fishing. Lake Saint Clair generally needs at least two inches of ice before you are going to walk on it. The good thing is that area in the winter generally can get up to a foot of ice, so in no time, you'll be out there fishing. A good rule of thumb is that if you don't see other people out on the ice, you probably don't want to go. They will also let you know when the ice is safe to fish on.
Carnivals and Fishing Tournaments in the Winter
There are a variety of fishing tournaments in the winter all throughout Lake Saint Clair. Be sure that you are checking out to see what cities like Algonac, Saint Clair, Chesterfield, and New Haven are offering for this winter. You may be able to take advantage of some great tournaments out there.
Some of my first favorite winter memories are the ones where I went ice fishing with my father. We still go to this day and we thoroughly enjoy it. You should give it a whirl; it is definitely an experience of a lifetime.
