Inquest Opens Into Death Of Eva Rausing

Tetra Pak heir Hans Kristian Rausing is still unfit to be questioned about the death of his wife Eva, the inquest into her death has heard.

Police revealed they only discovered her body after her husband was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs on July 9.

A small amount of drugs were found and a warrant was issued to search the couple’s home. Detective Inspector Sharon Marman said Mrs Rausing was found dead in a bedroom.

She told the hearing: "Authority was granted to search the home address and during the course of that search officers discovered the apparently lifeless body of a female in one of the bedrooms.”

She added of Mr Rausing: "He has been arrested on suspicion of her murder and we await notification of when he will be fit to be interviewed."

It is still unclear how long Mrs Rausing's body had lain in the five-storey Georgian townhouse, although some reports have suggested it had been there several days.

An initial post-mortem examination has proved inconclusive and police are waiting for further test results.

Mr Rausing is currently under medical supervision and detectives have been unable to interview him. He was represented at the inquest at Westminster Coroner's Court by Neil Saunders QC.

Mr and Mrs Rausing have battled their drug addiction for many years. In 2008, quantities of heroin and crack cocaine were found at their home after Mrs Rausing was caught arrested after attempting to smuggle a small amount of cocaine into a function at London’s American embassy.

She later said in a statement: "I have made a serious mistake which I very much regret. I intend to leave as soon as possible to seek the help that I very much need.

“I have made a grave error and I consider myself to have taken a wrong turn in the course of my life. I am very sorry for the upset I have caused. I thank my family and friends for their kindness and understanding."
