Ireland's Taylor Wins Fifth Straight World Crown

Irish lightweight Katie Taylor has won her fifth straight title in the Women’s World Boxing Championships in Jeju, South Korea.

Olympic champion Taylor secured gold with an unanimous decision while England’s Lisa Whiteside and Sandy Ryan both claimed silver medals.

Taylor defeated Azerbaijan’s Yana Allekseevana in the 60kg final with scores of 40-36, 39-37, 39-37 to equal India superstar Mary Kom’s haul of five world crowns.

Flyweight Whiteside added silver to her bronze medal she won two years ago in China when she lost a close decision in the 51kg decider to American Marlen Esparza.

Ryan, 21, faced Russia’s reigning European light welterweight champion Anastasilia Beliakova, but was forced to settle for silver after being on the wrong end of an unanimous decision in the 64kg final.
