    Israel Settlement Expansion Plan Condemned

Israel has ordered a new wave of settlement expansion in a move that the Palestinians say "speeds up the destruction of the peace process."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the planned construction of 2,000 new homes in the West Bank and East Jerusalem would be expedited.

The measure is part of a series of sanctions triggered by UNESCO's acceptance of the Palestinian Authority as a member.

The Israeli government also announced the suspension of the transfer of approximately £60m in taxes collected on behalf of the Palestinian Authority by Israel.

The money, collected monthly, is used to pay salaries of Palestinian public workers.

The Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas described the freezing of funds as "inhumane" and said the acceleration of settlement construction was a decision to "speed up the destruction of the peace process."

Mr Abbas has long insisted that a complete freeze on settlement expansion has to be in place before any new peace talks can take place.

The sanctions were sparked by Monday's vote at the UN which granted the Palestinian Authority full membership of UNESCO, despite opposition from the United States and Israel.

The US responded by cutting off funding to the body.

Israel has also indicated it will reconsider its co-operation with UNESCO.

The Palestinians, frustrated by the lack of progress towards a peace deal that would grant them statehood, have angered Jerusalem and Washington by pursuing a policy of seeking recognition by the UN and its various bodies.

The 2,000 new homes will be built in East Jerusalem, Ma'aleh Adumim, and Gush Etzion.

The Israeli settlements, built on occupied Palestinian land, are considered illegal under international law.

In a statement, the Israeli prime minister's office said the construction would take place in areas that Israel would retain under any future peace agreement.

Observant readers will notice that Yahoo (being unbiased...err..herm) have referred to Jerusalem and not Tel Aviv, informed and educated readers will be aware that the later is the capital of Israel.

They're building in Jerusalem because of the Dome of the Rock, They want to control & intimidate the Islamic pilgrims who wish to visit it.

Because Jerusalem is the capital city of the Israel (do you understand such obvious thing?)

JERUSALEM SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE AN INDEPENDENT STATE FREE FOR ALL THAT HAVE A RELIGIOUS LINK IN IT, LIKE THE CHRISTIANS FOR EXAMPLE.

Pops, being surrounded by 100m Arabs does not make the Arabs bullies. It's simply the result of geography. The Arab states have only once made an armed incursion into so-called Israeli territory in 1973, and that in response to the Six Day War in which Israel seized land from it's neighbours. It's perfectly possible for the little man to be the bully. Look at the UK. My country had the largest empire the world has ever known, yet it's smaller than Oregon. Some of the countries the UK either colonised or forced to its will were some of the world's biggest, e.g. China, India, Canada and the USA. There is plenty of precedent in history of small countries victimising larger ones. Israel is the same.

The six day war (1967) was precipitated by Syria, Jordan and Egypt, Mrs. Needless to say they lost and ran away in their thousands. Yours seems to be a selective memory. The result of the 1973 assault was much the same - how many times do you lot have to lose ? Give it up and sit down to UNCONDITIONAL peace talks while there is still some land left to talk about.

So this is the Israeli response to Palestine getting the vote from UNESCO. They intend to steal as much land as possible before Palestine is recognized as an independent state. If what they're doing is illegal under international law, Then why isn't the international community doing something about it?. America has shown its hand for the double dealing, hypocritical nation that it is. The US is forever banging on about how they are on the side of the oppressed but I guess they have nothing to gain & a lot to lose if Israel loses some of its grip on the Middle East. Israel should be shown international condemnation for their actions, Governments should press to apply international law & force the Zionists to remove their housing & return the land back to it's rightful owners, The Palestinians. Zionists, Can you not see the tide is turned in favour of the Palestinians. People around the world support their claim, The same people who have votes & can & will vote out a government who does little or nothing to free your thieving hands from lands which don't belong to you. You will never beat the Palestinians because your actions are the best recruitment campaign there is. Get out & get out now.

You are barking up a wrong tree. Israelis in their own independent country and not obliged to ask anybody where to build and what to build.

Sanchopanches... So basically you're saying that Israel doesn't have to adhere to international law & can do as it pleases with impunity?. What about the $60m they are withholding from the Palestinians?. In any other walk of life that would be called theft. But I really shouldn't expect anything more from the Zionists. They have been thieving since the days of the Canaanites, Who originally lived in what is now Israel. But because some mystical being said you can have it, You took it. In that case then, Santa said Israel belongs to me so I'll have it & all you Jews can piss off out of it.

Before the creation of israel the zionist terrorists were busy killing Palestinians and BRITISH soldiers, then the same zionist terrorists became leaders of israel. True jews are not zionists, just google 'jews against zionism'.
      • sanchopanches 6 months ago
So that means "antisemitic jews"? ))))
      • Monsigniore 6 months ago
They just killed those who were killing them, fair play!

Monsignore: Were the British deliberately killing jews or were they attempting to keep the peace and jews were killed whilst involved in terrorist acts ?.

Israel does seem to use 'holocaust guilt' to, quite often literally, steamroller their way through any situation! Supported by $billions from the USA they feel they are untouchable. I am sure that there are plenty of Jews in the area whose immediate ancestors lived there too who are as shocked as most of the world by their 'states' actions.
      • sanchopanches 6 months ago
Israel seem to use any constraction technics like cranes, buldozers and so on to build houses for their people in THEIR counntry

An occupied territory is, by definition, not their country.

Some of the comments here sail very close to the anti-semitic, Sanchopanches, and I have reported one that is unnecessarily abusive. However, Israel (particularly in its right-wing incarnation) and her American sponsors continue to blight the lives of the Palestinian people.
      • Monsigniore 6 months ago
"holocaust guilt"..??? 6 millions were slaughtered and nobody came to help them! Even the arabs made a pact with Hitler..!!! And you really think they haven't learn their lesson??? Oh yes they have, and it's not the idiotic remarks made by 99% of the posts in here that will change the way they act now and in the future!

Typical US reaction. They don't get their own way so they act like spoilt brats and withdraw funding. Come on people. The US will always back Israel even if Israel dropped a nuclear device. Israel is the US foothold in the Middle East. America is losing influence in other Middle East countries as the old dictators are overthrown. US foreign policy has never ever been dictated by humanitarian concerns or moral right/wrongs (look at their murderous behaviour in Vietnam etc).

Whats the matter with these israelis. They are treating the Palestinians like a sub-human species, just like the Nazis treated the Jews during the Second World War. However, History has a way of righting wrongs so sometime Israel's chickens will come home to roost.

To all those that critisize the Palestinians for rejecting the last Israel settlement plan for the West Bank whereby Israel offer 94% of it back to them. This was the rehashed plan which Ehud Barak propsed in the 1990s. The 94% did not include Jerusalem and more importantly its suburbs in the East which were to form part of greater Jerusalem so in practice the 94% was actually 60% of the West Bank. In addtion the border area along the Jordanian border was to remain in Israeli control and the Israelis were also to have control over the major roads running through the West Bank. This meant that the Palestinians would have a patchwork of settlements to run within the West Bank which is essentially what they have now. Furthermore Israel would have absolute control over the air space and place restrictions on the size of a future Palestinian army. More importantly the Israeli Water Authority would retain control of wells and water abstraction in the West Bank . Like everything in life the devils in the detail.

How long can the West continue to turn a blind eye to the immoral, illegal, inhumane stranglehold Israel holds over the people of Palestine.
Should our governments not banish Israel from all UN groups as they seem to only accept UN rulings when it suits them, and if USA withholds finance because of the UNESCO ruling then we should do likewise to them. The relationship between America and Israel is a greater theat to world peace than the Taliban or Alqaida ever could be.

It's about time all these middle eastern countries started withdrawing their money from countries that support Israel. America & Isreal DO NOT CONTROL THE WORLD ANYMORE, It's time the middle east stood up for the Palestinians. The Israeli's have no respect for anyone, they keep harping on about history well that's what it is history and it's time to deal with the present, after all there are bad things going on everyday all over the world.

There should be sanctions against Israel. What they are doing is illegal and against International law.
Israel has no interest in peace.

I read in another article that the Israeli government responded to the Palestinian UNESCO affair as "a tragedy". If such a minor event is a tragedy, one wonders how they describe the Holocaust. I can't help getting the feeling that Israel has been dining out on the persecution of the Jews under Hitler for too long. Why are people so afraid to criticise them?
    • Chris  •  6 months ago
I cant understand why these people think they can do what ever they want with impunity.

USA and Israel like to play with both sides of a coin. Both of them are now on the same side of a coin where isolation and arrogance remain. Power is transforming from one to another. Obama made a history for America when he got into the power for peacful talks and deeds and he is leaving with isolation and wrong side of history.

      A SERIOUS MESSAGE
it is abundantly obvious that israel have no intention of allowing a state of palestine to exist
the only time this is considered is when pressure is brought to bear on them from America
so i say this to them it is time to stop the spread of israeli draw your borders where they are and then live there in peace let the palestinians live in peace also in there part of there own country called the sovereign state of palestine use jerusalem as neutral territory and form a mixed peace keeping force of israeli and palestinian troops collectively known as the peace payroll giving neither side unfair favor this is the only way forward now
israel has nuclear weapons this we know and we can also hazard a guess as to the fact they have never tested them had they done so they may have learned that while they have arming codes they probably don't work so forget the big stick you constantly wave
sit down talk behave and mean what you say this applies equally to the palestinians
parts of the global war machine are very near to your territories and unless Syria is attacked will have nothing to do soon so i implore you think about what i have said make peace yourself before you are forced to make it
      thank-you
      ha ha ha

The measure is part of a series of sanctions triggered by UNESCO's acceptance of the Palestinian Authority as a member. Is it just my take on the ongoing situation that Israel is more the problem than the solution.
This blatant aggressive act of theirs to speed up illegal building on occupied land, against many UN resolutions, shows to me that is Israel first, second and stuff every one else. There will never be peace with this awful Israeli mindset
    • Dave Fully  •  6 months ago
UN resolution 242, this was passed in 1967 and banned the use of forced expulsions, settlement building and the return of lands stolen during the 1967 offensive..Why doesnt the US enforce this resolution like they used force to uphold the resolutions passed on Libya,Iraq,Afghanistan,Kuwait.. I wonder.........American Aeroplanes dropping American bombs on Arabs from US arms manufacturers, using Jewish bankers to finance and profit from it authorised by the US Jewish politicians.....

These are acts that go beyond the decades of oppression that amount to persecution of the Palestinian people as a whole along with their onging acts that amount to ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in East Jerusalem and the Bedouin in the Occupied Territories.
