Koran Protests: Karzai Appeals For Calm

Two Afghans have been killed and seven US soldiers wounded in a grenade attack in Afghanistan just hours after the nation's president appealed for calm over the burning of Korans at a US military base.

Nato's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) confirmed there had been an explosion outside one of its bases in northern Afghanistan.

A Kunduz police spokesman said: "The demonstrators hurled a hand grenade at US special forces base in Imam Sahib city of Kunduz province, as a result seven US special forces were wounded."

As the violent protests continued for a sixth day it is being reported that both France and Germany are temporarily withdrawing all civilian mentors and advisors from Afghan government ministries.

Earlier on Sunday, in a televised address, President Hamid Karzai "condemned with the strongest words" the treatment of Islam's holy book and said the people who did it should be punished.

But he also called for an end to the violence saying: "Now that we have shown our feelings, it is time to be calm and peaceful."

Mr Karzai said he respected the feelings of Afghans incensed by the Koran burning , but called on them not to "let the enemies of Afghanistan misuse their feelings".

He continued: "The demonstrations unfortunately had casualties, some 29 persons were martyred and around 200 wounded.

"We have ordered the security forces to be careful and protect people's lives and property."

The burning of the Korans had sparked five days of violent protests.

The Afghan Taliban have called on Afghans to kill foreign troops in revenge for the Koran burning, and claimed to have been behind the shooting deaths of two US officers within the heavily-fortified interior ministry in Kabul on Saturday.

Saturday's killings led the commander of US-led Nato forces, General John Allen, to withdraw foreign advisers from government ministries.

Afghan authorities said they were searching for a 25-year-old Afghan police intelligence officer, Abdul Saboor, who was the main suspect behind the murders.

Saboor had access to the Command and Control Centre where the dead American officers were found.

Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum has criticised President Barack Obama's earlier apology for the burnings by saying Afghanistan should apologise to the US for the deaths of soldiers.

The burning was accidental, and apologies were given. And it's still worth people's lives? Forgiveness clearly isn't a part of any religious equation here. A sorry state indeed.

Good old yanks.. they do have the knack....I have no affinity with the Koran or the Islamic faiths but I doubt whether the yanks would be too impressed if people went to the USA and started burning the stars and stripes!....

it happens regularly. They don't kill anyone over it, as burning the flag is protected under their freedom of expression laws.

This is the uninteligent excuse to kill more people, this has nothing to do with god or religion.
as a practicing christian i would just buy another Bible may the soldiers rest in peace

The Yanks are still under the illusion that Afghans love their presence in Afghanistan. The majority of Afghans are against occupation of their country by foreign invaders who have been killing civilians nonstop for 10 years now..Its time to pullout the troops and work towards a political settlement.

So they didn't cut down the "protesters" after that? That's discipline.

why dont we all just withdraw from these middle east countries stop getting involved in there problems let them do to each other as they please our governments should concentrate on our own countries problems, not get involved in others, we are well aware left to there own devices these countries will fail... tyranny and the laws of the stronger will survive and rule, but without the wests and americas support these countries will sink fast, then will be the time to step in and help but with on the basis of our rules

The problem is America does not seem to understand that any country they occupy will generate resistence to their occupation!

Are they so brainwashed by Israel that they believe they are actually welcome in an occupied country! The natives of that country will infiltrate what they consider to be the oppressive, occupying forces with a view to strike a blow at the occupier whenever the opportunity presents itself!

Israel, together with its rabid attack dog, America occupied the Lebanon for twenty years, this resulted in the birth of the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah, a fine example of another made in America problem for the world!

Occupation is the incubator of resistance movements, there is no telling with any degree of certainty how many Taliban resistance fighters have concealed themselves in the American / Israel compliant installed Afgan puppet government of Khazi!

There is no doubt in my mind there are many, just waiting for to strike a blow for what they consider to be Afgan's liberation from alien values!

      "some 29 persons were martyred"

Quite a price for burning printed paper. Dread to think what the outcome would have been if something meaningful had taken place

These Muslims need to develop a sense of perspective.

I'm sure that Salman Rushdie would have been overjoyed if they had just burned his books!

Afghan's GDP was under a billion a year before the invasion
Now the GDP is 2.9 billions which proves that the country is making progress
Bear in mind that the afghan generally are backwards uneducated people and easy to manupilate. The Quran burning is a silly act that killed several people and got the US prez to apologise un-necessarily

I think its time for WW3. Yes, i know there will be many casualties, and those who survive will have 3 eyes and 12 toes, but surely this planet cannot carry on with such reckless hatred? I know this hatred is mostly coming from uneducated cave dwellers but i think the human race needs a good shake up, things are dire at the moment.
