Leopard Mauls Six People In Attack In India

A wild leopard has mauled six people after it strayed into an Indian village in an attack that was caught on camera.

The big cat pounced on a forest guard at Prakash Nagar village in West Bengal.

Another man and a local woman were also among those attacked in the densely-populated slum village which is home to about 3,000 people.

Terrified villagers climbed on to roofs to escape and watched on in horror as forest guards tried to fight off the animal with their weapons.

Wildlife officers tried unsuccessfully several times to tranquillise the feline during the frenzied attack.

And just as forest officials thought the attack was over when the animal took refuge in a bush, it quickly re-emerged again and attacked three policemen.

A wildlife official said the big cat was startled by the hundreds of curious and frightened onlookers.

Kanchan Banerjee, a forest ranger from the Sukna Wildlife Range, told local newspaper The Hindu: "With the villagers trying to chase it, it tried to flee and injured five villagers in the process."

He said one forest guard was critically injured while others were not so seriously hurt.

The leopard was eventually shot and tied up before being taken to a nearby veterinary clinic where it later died.

It is not the first time a leopard has wreaked havoc in India with local media reporting in January how a feline went on an eight-hour rampage, racing through the streets and into people's homes and attacking at least six people in the 60,000-resident northern city of Karad.

After two gunshots fired in the air by police failed to scare off the animal, the leopard was killed by two shots at close-range from a police officer's revolver.

Indian farmers also often report deaths of cattle and other animals as a result of wild leopards.

Video on another site shows the villagers pursuing the leopard into some isolated bushes then setting fire to the them. What a surprise! the leopard ran out frightened to death and attacked more of them. Perhaps if they didn't chase the animal and allowed it to escape then more people wouldn't have been hurt and the leopard would still be alive!

Hi Richard if thats what happened then they got what they deserved, its what any animal would do if it was so scared , including humans , and as Edward Walters states , with a population oif 1.2 billion and cloimbing they are infringing on the natural habitat of the cats so what else can they do

Well.....even leapards like an Indian when they get peckish.
    • J G  •  10 months ago
It came looking for food ... which is what animals do. If you corner them they will attack.

Hang on a minute, Leopard runs one way, normal people run the other way. This lot chase it and get hurt, I wonder why?

They chased the Leopard away to prevent it from attacking again, wouldnt you do the same thing, or just stand there and shout 'shoo' and hope thats enough?

Reading this report the tone makes it sound likes it's the Leopards fault in both cases detailed! What the hell is that all about?!?! QUOTE: ''It is not the first time a leopard has wreaked havoc in India...." Don't you mean it's not the first time human populations have continued to decimate and encroach on endangered species last remaining habitat? Morons!

Ignore Gudlu. He is clearly very ignorant and cannot grasp decency, common sense or even grammar. You are absolutely right there Fair!. I agree with you. It's like in the UK when people complain about seagulls being pests - I rather think it is the humans invading every inch of coastline that is the problem there.

I do not understand why humans continue to believe that they have more of a right to the planet than any other species. Ahhh, the ignorance of man.

i agree with you two about people being idiots thinking that they have more right to be here than any animal, but that is very easy for us to sit here and say when we live in a country with no dangerous wild animals strolling around

maybe if we didn't steal their land and destroy their habitat this kind of thing wouldn't happen
      • ladylilac 10 months ago
Well said Jules - we always seem to 'wonder why' dont we - poor things - they dont stand a chance with us humans
      • ALMA 10 months ago
Oh yes maybe we humans should all commit suicide and let the animals have the planet back. Wherever humans live there are or have been wild animals. Maybe your pity should be directed at those people living in the highly populated slums. Where exactly do you suggest they go?
      • TG 10 months ago
Alma - You tend to forget the ever increasing human population is the real problem for all animals and other creatures. We cover more of their natural environment with concrete every year.

I must admit that I tend to admire your remarks of showing sympathy and concern for the lovely wild cat(Leopard) that is unfortunately now dead. Keep up the spirit of having concern for God's creatures!

What God's creature are u talking about?Do u mean to tell me that the animal was so pracious to the men, children and women in that village?Remember God commanded all things on earth but created man,so u see my good friend u are wrong this time around.
      • Donna 10 months ago
fritz, japheth's comment was simple - where is your confuison......and if you believe that god creased man - where is your proof. even with that belief god also created a leopard which is not far off extinction compared to the exponentially growing human population.
      • Gladmama 10 months ago
It's a shame all your comments are sympathetic with the animal, what about the people it attacked?
    • pt  •  10 months ago
leopards are extremely shy an elusive. It is hard enough seeing a tiger, and leopards have to avoid tigers.
    • Walt  •  10 months ago
Notice the language, '...frenzied attack'. Frenzied attack my arse. If dimwits are gonna chase a frightened animal, they shouldn't complain when it turns on them. I feel pity for the leopard!

      Poor Leopard was scared stiff.

"With the villagers trying to chase it, it tried to flee and injured five villagers in the process."
So why didn't they just leave it alone and it would have walked away. Serves them right, but the poor thing is now dead.
    • Tony  •  10 months ago
How sad! The report doesn`t specify the sex of the leopard; I hope it didn`t have young around somewhere.
    • Jodie  •  10 months ago
Poor Leopard, it was obviously scared and in its instinct tried to protect itself again ALL them hundreds of people, poor thing ends up being shot dead.....makes me so sad :(
    • me  •  10 months ago
nice that yet another ENDANGERED animal was killed because an over populated country cannot control its people breeding.......
    • smot  •  10 months ago
The poor Leopard, they're endangered as it is, surely something more humain could have been done and prevented its death. RIP Little Leopard x
    • ray  •  10 months ago
      Hiya all.
Did anyone think to search the area to see if it had young nearby?

it is a fight for life out there and well it does what it has to do if it just walked past then it would most likely of been shot.

Okay everybody? Ready to hit the thumbs down? Here we go:-

Can I suggest we can afford to lose people better than we can afford to lose leopards?

      Go!
