A 65-year-old mother who was killed in a dog attack in Liverpool has been described as a "gorgeous lady".

The victim, named locally as Ann Dunn, died at the scene of the attack at a home in Kirkdale on Monday afternoon.

Police said on Tuesday that a man has been arrested and five American bulldogs have been destroyed following the attack.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of owning a dog dangerously out of control and remains in custody, said Merseyside Police.

Tributes have been paid to Ms Dunn on social media.

Kate Burke wrote: "RIP gorgeous lady, still can't believe it Ann. Had some good times with you I will never forget.

"I am all so heartbroken for your kids and family right now. Don't want to even think how they are feeling.

"So happy I got to have an old chat with you on Friday even though it was only for 10 minutes, keeping looking [over] your family."

Christine Knowles posted: "So heartbreaking RIP Ann thinking of all Ann's family and friends."

Pat Forsyth said: "So so sad RIP Ann thinking of your family at this sad time."

Rachel Flood described Ms Dunn as "such a lovely woman".

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: "Five American bulldogs, which were inside the property, were handed over and have since been humanely destroyed."

American bulldogs are not on the list of banned breeds in the UK.

Police were called to the house on St Brigid’s Crescent by the North West Ambulance Service at 4.25pm.

The woman has not yet been formally identified but her next of kin have been informed and a post-mortem will be carried out to establish the cause of death, the force said.

It is unclear how many dogs were involved in the attack, although one neighbour claimed it was "at least two".

Detective Inspector Katie Coote said: “This is clearly a very distressing incident and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the lady who died.

“Our enquiries remain ongoing as we seek to establish what has happened and I would urge anyone who could assist our enquiries to get in touch.”
