London To New York In An Hour: New Airbus Plane Will Be Twice As Fast As Concorde
Jet will travel at 3,425mph
Passengers could jet from London to New York in just an hour in a hi-tech new plane designed by Airbus.
The hypersonic craft patented by the company would travel twice as fast as Concorde - flying at an altitude of 100,000 feet.
A patent describes a vehicle powered by three different types of engine - and capable of a vertical climb at take-off.
Twin turbo jets would help the jet to climb at take-off, retracting into the fuselage as the jet sped towards the sound barrier.
A rocket motor then takes the plane to an altitude of 100,000ft, where twin wing-mounted ramjets push it to its final speed of 4.5 times the speed of sound.
The jet is described as, ‘an air vehicle including a fuselage, a gothic delta wing distributed on either side of the fuselage, and a system of motors able to propel the air vehicle.'
