Lottery Winners To Make Friends Millionaires

The couple who won the £101m EuroMillions jackpot have said they will turn their friends and family into millionaires too.

Dave and Angela Dawes, from Wisbech in Cambridgeshire, were the only winners of the jackpot and have now gone public about their windfall.

The draw was third time lucky for the couple who had only played EuroMillions twice before.

Mr Dawes, 47, was a shift supervisor at Premier Foods (Xetra: A0B7GL - news) but has already officially retired. His partner, 43, is a volunteer for the British Heart Foundation.

They were watching television at home when the lottery took place on Friday, and were stunned as all their numbers came up.

Mr Dawes said: "The EuroMillions draw show came on so we kept watching, not thinking we would win anything.

"We got our tickets out and watched in shock as, one by one, the numbers came up on the line I'd chosen.

"We couldn't believe it. It was too late to call Camelot (OTC BB: CAML.OB - news) so I kept the ticket on me all night until the morning but we didn't sleep a wink."

They had picked the numbers at random and Mr Dawes bought the ticket from WH Smith (Other OTC: WHTPF.PK - news) .

It is the third largest lottery win in British history and makes them the 703rd richest people in the country.

They have already said they will give up to £20m away to friends and family and will also donate amounts to various charities.

Ms Dawes said: "It's an excessive amount of money but we intend to make our friends and family millionaires."

Even if they did nothing with the money and put it in a savings account it would make them £9,000-a-day in interest.

The couple, who currently live in a one-bed flat, have been together for four years and Ms Dawes has already taken her other half's name.

They had put off getting married due to the expense but are now planning the wedding of their dreams in Portugal next year.

First (OTC BB: FSTC.OB - news) on their shopping list is a new diamond engagement ring to replace the £800 one Ms Dawes has now, followed by a house in Portugal and a Rolls Royce (LSE: RR.L - news) .

Mr Dawes, an avid Chelsea fan, is also planning to buy a season ticket and house near the football team's west London ground.

"I'm not worried about getting a box - I want to stand with the real fans and watch my team play," he said.

"I'd also love to live near the ground and have Frank Lampard come over for a cup of tea."

The couple plan to take time out to consider exact plans but intend to give some of the cash to children's charities.

Their success means they are £1m better off than David Bowie, according to The Sunday Times Rich List 2011.

They are also richer than celebrity couples Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin (£48m) and Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne (£95m).

The biggest-ever EuroMillions prize was a £161m jackpot won by Colin and Chris Weir, from Largs, Scotland, earlier this year.

The decision over whether to go public after winning such a huge amount has always been divisive.

The Weirs were besieged by sackloads of begging letters after they gave television and newspaper interviews and even went into hiding for a while.
