JULIUS Malema’s legal representative, Andre Bezuidenhout, said on Friday he had received information on a warrant of arrest for Mr Malema.
Mr Bezuidenhout said they were talking to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the Hawks in a bid to have Mr Malema appear in court next week.
Mr Bezuidenhout could not confirm the charges.
“We have not seen the details but we accept that there is a warrant,” said Mr Bezuidenhout.
Another of Mr Malema’s legal representatives, Nicqui Galaktiou, told Reuters the charges stemmed from an investigation by the police’s elite Hawks detective division, which has been probing the 31-year-old Mr Malema for alleged corruption relating to the awarding of government contracts in his native Limpopo province.
“We are busy arranging Mr Malema’s appearance next week,” she said. “We don’t have a confirmed date yet. We have not seen the warrant of arrest. We don’t know what the charges are. He won’t be jailed.”
The Hawks could not confirm whether a warrant had been issued as they do not issue warrants. Hawks spokesman Macintosh Polela said the Hawks, after an investigation, would apply to the National Prosecuting Authority for a warrant, and execute it if it was issued.
Earlier on Friday there were rumours of an arrest warrant for Mr Malema, who is also being investigated after trade union Solidarity filed criminal charges of incitement to violence and intimidation against him in connection with his role in the recent violence in the mining industry.
