Man Falls To Death After Niagara Cop Chase

A man has been killed and a police officer left injured after they fell over a cliff and down a gorge near Niagara Falls during a chase.

Canadian police said the officer was pursuing a man, claimed by witnesses to be a teenager, on Tuesday afternoon.

They both went over a wall, plunging near or to the bottom of Niagara Gorge, about 1.2 miles (2kms) north of the falls.

The victims had to be reached by rescue crews using a hard-framed basket attached to a fire engine, according to local media reports.

It was unclear whether they fell into the rushing water below or into bushes.

Police said the injured Niagara Regional police officer was pulled 100ft (30m) out of the gorge and airlifted to a hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, with a broken leg.

The state's Special Investigations Unit said firefighters later recovered the body of the man being chased, who died of injuries from the fall.

The unit is currently probing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Niagara Falls, one of the world's major tourist attractions, consists of three waterfalls that straddle the border between Canada and the US.
