Man In Pants Crawls Across Ice To Save Dog

This is the astonishing moment a man is snapped crawling across an icy river in just his underpants to rescue his dog.

The owner is pictured inching across the River Stour before tumbling into the freezing water just metres away from his pet.

Incredibly, both the owner and the dog managed to clamber out of the river unscathed, if a little cold, and then continued their walk.

Firefighters were quick to condemn the man's actions as "extremely dangerous" and warned others not to follow suit.

The scene was captured by Paul Wenborne, 52, who was walking his own dog by the river in bitterly cold temperatures on Sunday.

He said he was with two friends and watched in disbelief as the owner stripped down to his pants and began crawling across the ice.

He said: "I couldn't believe what I was seeing. You always hear about people dying doing stuff like this. It really was a foolish act of bravery."

A spokesman for Essex fire service said: "While the ice appears to be strong it can be very thin."

The ice remained across much of the country this weekend, with the mercury dipping as low as -15.6C in Holbeach, Lincolnshire .

Brave man although I would do the same I am afraid - love my dog too much just to let her drown - I am a strong swimmer in a heated pool though!

I would go in after one of mine without a second thought although to be fair it is not likely to happen as mine are always on the lead apart from in the well fenced back garden.

good for the bloke being alive is to do what you think you can even if its at the pointy end of the stick if we all sat back and did the paperwork before acting we,d all be one step closer to being automotons like the firebrigade

At least he had a little sense, in that he removed his clothing so it would stay dry, so as soon as he got back to land he could put on something to keep him warm. Many would have ended up going in fully dressed and drowned or died of hyperthermia before getting home.

Christ on a bike! That's what I call devotion to your pet. They both fell into the water, got out, and carried on with their walk. The bloke in his undies must have been perishing. Good result, but I wonder if someone would be suing someone if there had been a fatality.
