The man accused of stabbing Reverend John Suddards and Betty Yates to death in their own homes has appeared in court.
Stephen Farrow, 47, stood in the dock at North Avon Magistrates, flanked by two security guards.
He spoke quietly and calmly to confirm his name and date of birth and that he had no fixed address.
Farrow is charged with the murder of 59-year-old Rev John Suddards, who was found dead in his vicarage in Thornbury on Valentine's Day.
Retired teacher Betty Yates was found on New Year's Day at the foot of her stairs at her riverside cottage in the town of Bewdley, Worcestershire.
The 6ft 4in defendant also faced a charge of burglary at a property in Thornbury between December 21 and January 3.
He was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning after a tip off from a member of the public.
Mr Farrow has been remanded in custody to appear at Bristol Crown Court for a bail hearing tomorrow.
