Man turns home into Sistine Chapel tribute

From the outside, his £86-a-week council house in Brighton looks like any other 1960s terraced home.

But Robert Burns has covered every inside wall with scale replicas of Renaissance frescoes and paintings by Italian masters.

The former decorator said: "I did think, I wonder if I can emulate this in some small way, and so I started painting the house.

"I always wind up doing the tour and everyone walks away thinking you're either totally barking or quite interesting."

The self-taught artist uses DIY shop emulsion to create his murals, which include a copy of Rafael's Sistine Madonna, frescoes by artists such as Correggio and a portrait of Jesus inspired by a picture of Russell Brand.

What a talented guy, this is much better than some of the cr@p that passes for art these days, give this guy the next Turner prize, I only wish I could paint like that!!

I'ts a shame how the goverment get the genral public to turn on each other, why shouldn't this guy have a council house. Remember it was the conservatives that sold all the council houses.

You can be totally barking AND quite interesting, Mr Burns. In fact the best people often are.

He is extremely talented. Such beauty. It is a shame that he does not own his house. All that creativeness and wonder would be lost to another if he moved and the new tenant might not appreciate the art and emulsion over it. I think he should display his work to the public; who knows someone might buy the house for him.

Having read most of your comments I wonder how many of you have actually watched the video? For those that haven't, the answer to some of your very rude comments; He's 62 years old (so probably retiring), it's taken him 12 years to do (more then likely after work) and is now painting on canvas ready for when he moves out. Maybe it would be more productive to find out the whole story before posting snide comments. Oh, and for the record I live in a council house alone with my 2 children and work full-time earning a comfortable salary and am unable to move out and buy my own house because I can not get a mortgage due to the recession. Does that mean that I am sponging off society and don't deserve my home?

Well said GK I am in the same position, I once owned my own house and went into hospital and rehab and squatters moved into my home.

And yes I also work in case anyone wants to coment.

Some people amaze me!! This guy is extremely talented, clearly as it says he's a former decorator he must be retired so he's paid into the system!! Amazing.

Well said, I'm 39 & worked since I was 16 but had to retire last yr due to a massive stroke. I'm now being called a waster who is sponging from the tax man. I paid plenty of taxes for 22yrs but all of a sudden I'm the dregs of society despite being paralysed down my complete right side & lost my speech. I also have CRPS which I'd love to talk about. Pls follow me on twitter.com/@Ian_munro

LMAO to the people who are bitter because he lives in a council house. You remind me of my ex girlfriend who would rant and rave and throw her arms (and legs) in the air complaining that her 'best' friend has bought and sold her council house and re bought something bigger and better than what she had. And most of you if not all of you have cheated with your child tax credits or working tax credits. That is a fact.
How Terribly British - man does good, something inspirational and all we try to do is cut him down. He's done something successful, let's celebrate him.

You're right. At least it won't be decorated to sub-standard and souless. I hoep he can remain to enjoy his art for a long time.... I will not cut him down.

How absolutely gorgeous, lets hope this guy is picked by someone (like Simon Cowell of the Art world). He is a fabulous painter. Let's hope his canvas paintings make him famous in his own lifetime. The very best of luck to him.

What a fantastic job he has done to his house, a real work of art, a good decorator is always useful, they are as rare as hens teeth, pity his phone number isn't in the article!

As to the pro's and con's in this thread There are not many people that can buy a house, the latest estimate is that you need a joint income of over 45000 per year for a first time buyer!! Better to do what he has done than to spend it in the pub!

He could be working and doing his house in his spare time. Maybe he wants a council house. That is what a free country is all about.

I think it is excellent, all the best to him. I hope he does well.

I would rather view his work than some of the puerile crap exhibited at tate modern by lovies with little talent for art but great talent for taking the P++S

I wish he'd come and do mine like that. i think it's fantastic. What a skill.

It is fanastic to see a tenant taking such interest in his house - not all tenants would have the same interest and many don't bother to do anything with their homes as they feel the house doesn't belong to them.

I think its absolutely brill that anyone in council house or not would paint it like he's done. Amazing work by a decorator with emulsion from the local D.I.Y. I wonder if he'll be able to go 50/50 with the council if people want to come and see it. Also I wonder if the council may like to give him a job doing some around the quite drab towns we've got. A good paint job can go a long way, would save 's on having to rebuild if there's talent like his around.

Very talented Man fantastic work wish I could paint like him, Good Luck

It is a real shame that he doesn't own this property, however god for bid if he ever has to move out...the council will tell him to paint it back to the the way it was when he moved in!
after all the council make people leave the houses that they rent in the same way as when they moved in - poor bloke, it'll break his heart to have to go over all his hard 'work'. Does this man work?

bless him, hopefully he'll be able to stay in the house, unless the con-dems say he can't because council houses shouldn't be for life.
