Millions Plan To Jet Off For Bank Holiday

Just under two million Britons are going abroad this weekend over the bank holiday, according to the travel industry.

"As always at the end of a major sporting event, many people are looking to head off for a break either at home or overseas," said Abta chief executive Mark Tanzer.

"Spain and Greece continue to be popular with many holidaymakers taking advantage of the strong pound, which is at a four-year high against the euro, as well as the fact that prices in bars and restaurants have come down."

And while 1.8 million are jetting off in search of sun, those left behind can look forward to a wet weekend.

Forecasters are predicting possibly heavy and thundery rain across Wales, southwest England and Northern Ireland on Friday, followed by a very unsettled day across the UK on Saturday with plenty of cloud and heavy, sometimes thundery, downpours.

It may be quite windy on Saturday, with temperatures not much higher over the weekend than 20C (68F) - a stark contrast with last weekend when the thermometer touched 32C (90F).

For those people staying in Britain but planning on travelling by car, the Highways Agency says about 194 miles of roadworks will be finished before the weekend and 59 miles of further works will be suspended over the holiday period.

But a number of key routes will still have roadworks, including a section of the M1 near Luton in Bedfordshire.

On the railways , where around six million passengers are expected to travel over the long weekend, 94% of services are scheduled to run as normal, although some engineering work is planned.
