Mother Of Murdered Teen Changes Court Defence

The mother of murdered teenager Shafilea Ahmed has said in a written statement she saw her husband attack her daughter.

The jury at the murder trial was told a short while ago that Farzana Ahmed's version of events has changed.

Farzana Ahmed and her husband Iftikhar are on trial at Chester Crown Court for the murder of their 17-year-old daughter Shafilea in 2003. They deny the charge.

Their daughter Alesha has previously told the court she witnessed her parents suffocate Shafilea with a plastic bag at the family home in Warrington following years of physical abuse and arguments over her "westernised" lifestyle.

The jury had also seen "letters" written by another daughter, Mevish, to a friend "describing the killing". Mevish Ahmed has told the jury the documents were "fictional" and said she does not believe her parents are responsible for Shafilea's death.

The judge has told the jury that on Tuesday morning they will be given details of the change in Mrs Ahmed's version of events in written form.
