Nigel Farage hit by egg: Seven other politicians attacked by a protein protest

A quiet afternoon greeting voters in Nottingham took a turn for the worse for UKIP's Nigel Farage.

The visit had been meant to drum up support for the upcoming European elections - but it quickly ended when the 50 year-old politician was hit by an egg thrown by an anti-UKIP protester.

Not wanting to stay among an unwelcome crowd, Mr Farage quickly clambered into his car and scarpered.

But Mr Farage should perhaps not take the attack too personally - he joins an illustrious club of politicians who have been similarly pelted during a walkabout.

Yahoo takes a look at the other politicians who've had a cracking time rallying support:

Ed Miliband:

Poor Ed - the opposition leader has been hit by an egg twice in his career. The most recent assault occurred in August 2013 during a campaign visit to south London.

As he shrugged off his yolk-soaked jacket he made light of the incident and said: 'This is not the first time it's happened to me, I'm sure it's not the last.'

Nick Griffin:

The BNP leader was forced to abandon a press conference outside Westminster Palace in 2009 when a crowd of protesters pelted him with eggs while yelling 'Nazi scum'.

He escaped unscathed into his car but two people were taken to hospital after the scuffle.

George Galloway:

The former Celebrity Big Brother star was shown a lack of Respect after his victory in the Bradford West by-election in March 2012, when a protester, armed with a carton of eggs, began to lob them at the former Labour politician.

Ruth Kelly:

The Labour politician had been due to give evidence against a Fathers 4 Justice campaigner in February 2006 but was given her verdict as she left Salford Magistrates' Court.

David Cameron:

Then the Conservative party leader in opposition, David Cameron was touring a college in Saltash, Cornwall in April 2010 when he was struck by a voice of the youth.

A student construction worker pelted the now Prime Minister, but Mr Cameron shrugged it off and said it was the 'first of the campaign' before the general election.

The 16-year-old student was arrested briefly but released and Mr Cameron was later seen in Torquay with a fresh shirt.

John Prescott:

Labour politician John Prescott was the only one to react to the egg protest.

After he was hit in Rhyl, Wales in 2001, Prescott turned to his assailant, Craig Evans, and immediately punched him.

The pair were involved in a nasty scuffle before police pulled the pair apart. Mr Evans spent several hours in custody but was not charged.

Peter Mandelson:

The Labour politician was not egged but slimed with custard by a climate change protester before a low-carbon economy summit in 2009.

Leila Deen, 29, from the campaign group 'Plane Stupid' that opposed the third runway at Heathrow Airport, said: 'I came here today to make a point - and I think I made that point. The only thing green about Peter Mandelson is the slime coursing through his veins.'
