Norfolk River Death: 'Woman Was Strangled'

A woman whose body was found in a river on the Norfolk Broads was probably strangled, police have said.

The bodies of a man and a woman, both thought to be aged in their 40s, were discovered in the River Bure on Sunday afternoon, close to where a 13-year-old girl was found alone on a rented boat.

A post mortem has shown that the woman died before entering the water and that the likely cause of death was strangulation.

The man is believed to have died through drowning, and his death is not being treated as suspicious.

Formal identification on both people has not yet taken place.

Detective Superintendent Jes Fry, of the joint Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team, said: "Our concerns remain for the welfare of the 13-year-old girl.

"We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

"Both deaths will now be referred to the coroner and a file will be prepared for the inquest."

The couple, from Surrey, were on a boating holiday. The woman is believed to be the girl's mother, and the man her mother's partner.

The initial search began after a member of the public realised a hire boat had not been returned.

Police later found the boat moored to a tree between Wroxham Broad and Salhouse Broad. The girl was discovered on board unharmed.

The area is an isolated spot with no official mooring. It is surrounded by forest and marsh with no foot access.
