Olympic Ring: Torchbearer Proposes On Relay

An Olympic torchbearer has used his moment in the spotlight to get down on one knee and propose to his girlfriend.

David State popped the question to Christine Langham as he carried the torch into the town of Loftus in Cleveland, North Yorkshire. The 25-year-old ran 300m with the Olympic flame before he stopped to give Miss Langham a kiss in front of cheering crowds.

Miss Langham, 27, who is due to give birth to the couple's first child in three weeks' time, was visibly surprised but accepted immediately.

She said afterwards: "I didn't have a clue. It was shocking, surprising. I wondered what he was doing.

"It was just a complete shock. There were just so many people there - and he had the rest of that hill to run up, too.

"He was taking a chance I didn't give birth there and then, really," she added.

Mr State said he had been planning the stunt since March.

The couple from Redcar in Cleveland have been together for nearly two years.

Mr State was nominated to carry the torch because of his work in the community, including volunteering with the British Red Cross.
