On this day 41 years ago, the 15,007,034th Volkswagen Beetle rolled off the assembly line, breaking the production record previously held by Ford for their iconic Model T.

The VW Beetle, first built in the 1930s, was designed and built as an inexpensive 'people's car', with production starting in present day Wolfsburg, Germany.

The now unmissable car was produced from 1938, although it wasn't assembled on a full-scale basis until after the Second World War.

In 1998, VW started to sell the much-anticipated 'new Beetle', even though they continued to produce its iconic predecessor until June 2003.

Ford's Model T, formerly the world's most produced car, was first made in Detroit, Michigan, in 1908.

It was made until 1927, and held the record for the world's best-selling car for more than four decades.
