Police in Liverpool have launched a murder inquiry after one man was shot dead and another critically injured.
Paramedics were called just after 1am following reports of gunfire in Norris Green.
A man believed to be in his 30s died at the scene. He has been named locally as Joe Thompson.
The other victim, who is thought to be in his 20s, was taken to hospital with bullet wounds. His condition is said to be "critical".
Police have described the incident at Ravensthorpe Green as a targeted attack.
The scene, next to playing fields, has been cordoned off and scenes of crime officers are investigating. A white Ford Focus car was taken away from the scene for analysis.
Police say the motive for the killing is not clear and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
A message attached to flowers laid at the scene reads: "Never forget you Joe. RIP Bro. Kendo and family."
Norris Green has a reputation for gang-related violence, drug-dealing and armed crime but local councillor Barry Kushner says that is unfair.
He said: "It has had problems but there is certainly no gang warfare.
"This appears to be a one-off targeted incident. The area's reputation is not at all accurate. People locally are inevitably shocked by what has happened but I don't believe it is part of a wider problem."
