A naked bike ride has sparked outrage after onlookers spotted as girl thought to be as young as 8 taking part.

Brighton resident Chris Holmes said he was “shocked and angry” to see the youngster among the 1,000-strong event at the seaside city.

However, organisers of the cycle, which saw campaigners stripping off to raise awareness about the vulnerability of bike users on the roads, said the criticism was “paranoid” and “unnecessary”.

All ages were welcome at the event, which took place on the south coast on Sunday, but under-16s had to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Chris Holmes was among several who reported a "completely naked" youngster who appeared to be as young as eight.

"I am so angry it's untrue," he said. "Now OK, each to their own, and if you're over 18 then it's your choice as an adult.

"But there was an 8 or 9-year-old girl on her bike completely naked and it shocked me beyond words.

"I spoke to the organisers who seemed to think this was fine."

Duncan Blinkhorn, 53, co-organiser of the event that has run for nine of the last 10 years, said: "I think it is paranoia. It's definitely an unnecessary reaction.

"We always have children and families on the ride and they never have a bad experience.

"I can see no reason at all to change the way we run it.

"We don't want to make it an adult only event, that wouldn't have the right vibe at all."

Sunday's ride saw hundreds strip down and saddle up at The Level, a Brighton park, and pedal to the Black Rock naturist beach.

The event is one of many held across the globe.

Sussex Police confirmed they are yet to receive any complaints about the child but will "consider whether any action is necessary".

A spokesman said: "We had no knowledge of a young rider at the time of the naked bike ride and we have had no reports or complaints from members of the public.

"However, it has been drawn to our attention and we will consider whether any action is necessary."
