Rehman humbles England as Pakistan clinch

ABU DHABI (Reuters) - Spinner Abdur Rehman took six wickets as Pakistan beat England by 72 runs in the second test on Saturday to clinch the three-match series, bowling out the tourists for 72 in their second innings after another abject batting display.

England, the number one test side in the world, had earlier dismissed Pakistan for 214 to give themselves a target of 145 to win in Abu Dhabi.

But Andrew Strauss's men again failed to deal with the host's triple spin threat of Rehman, Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Hafeez.

Rehman ended on 6-25, while Ajmal's figures were 3-22.

"The way the ball was turning it was really difficult to play left-arm spinners on that wicket," Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq told reporters. "So we were thinking we can put pressure on England and make a match of it.

"It's a big win for us - even in these kinds of conditions to beat the number one side is a big effort from our team."

For England, only Strauss (32) and Matt Prior (18) managed double figures in the second innings, the tourists losing all 10 wickets in the space of 22 overs.

"Those (low) totals are the hardest to chase because you know you are almost there and it's easy to be caught between two stools, whether to be patient and wait for scoring opportunities to appear or to take the bull by the horns," Strauss told reporters.

"It's bitterly disappointing ... having done all that hard work you need to go on and complete the job and we just didn't play well enough, individually and collectively."

Alastair Cook (7) was the first to go, caught and bowled by Hafeez, who stooped to get his fingers to the ball inches from the turf.

Ian Bell (3) came in at number three in place of Jonathan Trott who had been off the field with a stomach complaint and the Warwickshire batsman lasted just three balls before deflecting an Ajmal delivery on to his stumps with an inside edge.

Kevin Pietersen (1) and Eoin Morgan (0) then continued their miserable form, falling to Rehman in the space of three balls.

Pietersen was trapped lbw after lunging forward to defend, while Morgan saw his leg stump felled.

Strauss had earlier escaped, deflecting a Rehman delivery off his bat and pad to Azhar Ali at short leg. Ali sunk to his knees to scoop the ball up before it hit the ground, but the third umpire thought otherwise, earning the England captain what was to prove to be a fleeting reprieve.

Strauss went lbw to Rehman, as did the returning Trott (1), while the slow left-armer clean bowled Broad through the gate as England offered little resistance.

Earlier, Monty Panesar bagged six wickets in his first test since 2009 as England thrived in the field, but their subsequent collapse was reminiscent of their woes in the first test in Dubai, when they slumped to 43-5 in their first innings and went on to lose by 10 wickets.

Pakistan play their home matches in the Gulf due to security problems at home.

No excuses, England, you were pathetic. Just when are they going to learn how to play spin bowling?

Probably the greatest turnaround victory in modern cricket. Mr Bowden should be ashamed of the Strauss not-out (the replays were very clear) but anyway it didn't matter. The two on-field umpires have been excellent. Pakistan are now an excellent team with a couple of star bowlers in Ajmal and Gul. In Shafiq and Ali they have two potential batting stars of the future. Abdul Rehman has shown his is one of the best spinners around at present. Misbah ia a good leader of men and Younus Khan is a gent and still has some good innings left in him. Mohsin Khan MUST be given the fulltime coaching job. Pakistan should play Ajmal, Rehman and Gul plus either Afridi, Umar Akmal or Abdul Razzak. Pannesar is a better spinner than Swann. Morgan is not a Test player. Also the Pakistan lower order should slogg like the English tail. Gul and Ajmal can easily contribute 50 runs between them most innings. Well done Pakistan you have proudly stepped up in the face of adversity.

Yes accurate spin bowling did for the English Batsmen- cant really blame the english bowlers- Panasar etc did as good a job as they could,
I bet that put a dent in that moronic lot called "The barmy army"- hope so as it has become almost a mafia wherever they go. Their idea is to get drunk every night and think they have a right to tell other england supporters what they should be doing. That moron with the trumpet should have it rammed up where the sun does not shine.. They try to rule other england supporters who turn up at the ground(s)- they think they have the right to tell people where to sit and what to do.As for the moronic football banners some bring along- idioitic egotists like that should grow up. The women with them are no better than,,,, and worse.
Most get drunk every night and consider like their male morons that people sho are not drunk are somehow wrong. Last year we sat near the moron with the trumpet and the steward told him he was making too much noise - he got all upperty and saying "How HE had the right to play etc etc" The steward(my nephew btw- 6ft 2 of solid bone and muscle-impervious to pain and a karate instructor)promised he and his trumpet would be banned.
The idiot being drunk of cpourse squared up to this steward-- bad idea as the steward merely looked at him and said, "Sir do sit down before you fall down fast on the pavement outside! The morons then preceded to make animal noises all afternoon as they got more drunk- at stumps they got into the bar and got even more drunk.. I cannot consider they watch the cricket other than through a haze of booze or early mornijng hangovers.
They are not the great people some consider they are- they are moroni morons who actually do a great deal of harm to english cricket and to those fans who do not consider that getting drunk all day and night as being a good supporter. The Hotels they stay at- certainly in the UK - are easily identified- sick outside and running down the walls from the windows and in one hotel they were asked to leave as the animal noises they made all night kept everyone awake.Far from being ambassadors these people are actually keeping up the idea that English fans of cricket are merely football morons in different guise.

So what exactly makes Britain "great"? We almost never win at games we claim 2 have invented. Was our "greatness" only based on forcefully colonizing and enslaving people because seems like we always lose when competing on fair grounds. The English league is very competitive but limited to England. When our good teams play on international scale its like men vs boys...Well done Pakistan!
