Penalty Hoodoo: England Crash Out Of Euro 2012

Italy are through to the Euro 2012 semi-finals after beating England in a penalty shoot-out.

Ashley Young hit the crossbar with England's third, and Ashley Cole's attempt was saved by Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon diving to his left.

Alessandro Diamanti then scored the decisive spot kick to make it 4-2 on penalties, after the match ended without a goal after extra time.

Italy will now play Germany in a semi-final later this week in Warsaw, Poland.

It was yet another cruel exit from a major tournament for England after a penalty shoot-out.

England lost to Portugal in the same way at Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup.

In a blistering start to the match, Daniele De Rossi hit the post in the third minute with a left-foot shot from 25 yards, which beat goalkeeper Joe Hart's dive.

At the other end, Italy's Buffon then swatted away England defender Glen Johnson's scooped shot from close-range.

Each team had scores more chances throughout the game, but none so close as Antonio Nocerino's attempt - which reached the back of the net in the 115th minute, but he was ruled offside.
