Pensioner sentenced for naked DIY exploits

A court has heard how a pensioner indulged in DIY chores such as gardening and cleaning roof gutters completely naked.

Kevin Lavelle, 80, of Heald Green, Stockport, was slapped with a suspended jail sentence
on Monday after pleading guilty to three counts of indecent exposure at Stockport Magistrates.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) told Yahoo! News today how they charged Mr Lavelle on 8 July after a witness caught him gardening on his front lawn wearing nothing but a blue hat.

On a separate occasion, the elderly naturist was discovered preening a rose bush in the nude by a shocked neighbour, police added.

A GMP spokesman confirmed with Yahoo! News that Mr Lavelle was first arrested on 26 June this year.

Mr Lavelle would also stand on his roof cleaning guttering and wash his car in the nude, the court heard.

Concerned neighbours joined forces and compiled a dossier of evidence of Lavelle’s 18-month-long bizarre exploits.

An 80-year-old neighbour, John Mead, told Magistrates: “I have seen him completely naked changing a wheel on his car on the drive. We did not know what the law was at first because he was in his back garden but it got worse. He would stand against his wall with nothing on. He caused real upset. The neighbours joined forces and we have all been reporting him.”

Mr Lavelle was jailed for eight weeks which was suspended for six months. He has also been tagged while he is placed under house arrest between 4pm and 11pm everyday for the next two months.

Mr Lavelle will now be listed on the Sex Offender’s Register for seven years.
