Philip Seymour Hoffman Tribute At MTV Awards

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire took home the biggest prizes of the night at the MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles with its star paying tribute to Philip Seymour Hoffman.

The movie was named best film with Jennifer Lawrence receiving the best female prize and Josh Hutcherson best male.

On-hand to objectify the best male performance nominees were Leslie Mann, Cameron Diaz, Nicki Minaj and Kate Upton.

"Matthew McConaugh-heyyy," said Minaj. "I have a pair of bongos you can play."

Hutcherson paid tribute to co-star Philip Seymour Hoffman in his acceptance speech after the star died on February 2 from a combination of heroin, cocaine and other drugs.

"If Philip were here he would think this was really cool," said Hutcherson. "To have him in our movie was one of the coolest things. We think about him every day on set. This definitely goes out to him as well."

Hoffman played Plutarch Heavensbee in Catching Fire and only had seven days of filming left on the final film before he died.

Tributes were also paid to Fast & Furious star Paul Walker who was killed in a car crash in California on November 30.

Dozens of awards were given out during the ceremony including best kiss and best shirtless moment, which went to Zac Efron for his role in That Awkward Moment.

Receiving this year's trailblazer award was Channing Tatum who was the first male to gain the honour after Emma Stone and Emma Watson.

Tatum accepted the award from his Jupiter Ascending co-star Mila Kunis and his 22 Jump Street co-star Jonah Hill. Tatum admitted he thought he was being punked when he found out he would get the award.

Mark Wahlberg collected the generation award. "I know what this really means," said Wahlberg, adding that this is the award that signifies "You're done."

Host Conan O'Brien kicked off the ceremony with a challenge to gain 50 celebrity cameos for his opening segment and a musical number about hating musical numbers in big awards shows.

Rihanna took to the stage with Eminem to perform their hit The Monster while Ellie Goulding sang Beating Heart from the Divergent soundtrack.

Best kiss went to Emma Roberts, Jennifer Aniston and Will Poulter for their comedy We're the Millers.

A large part of the show's content was the trailers and plugs for the upcoming summer blockbusters.

Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx introduced a clip from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 showing Spider-Man and the sparkling blue villain Electro (Foxx) battling in New York's Times Square.

Also expected to dominate at the box office is X-Men: Days of Future Past which was touted with an introduction by one of its new stars, Ellen Page, who will take on the role of Shadowcat.

The upcoming film sees the X-Men joining forces with their younger selves and introduces a number of new mutants - Blink, Sunspot, Warpath and Bishop.
