As a Naval Architect myself, (I design Carg ovessels not cruise ships), this has amazed me. That these vessels appear to be single hull! With a double hull structure, less water would have been allowed into the vessel and tehre could have been more Bulkheads in each wing tank. This should be looked into by Classification rules and regulations. I think I shall contact my old boss in classification and see if we can get some new design rules constructructe.

I think I read somewhere that CC does indeed have a double hull structure but with some 114,000 tons travelling at several knots then the double hull clearly would not withstand an impact with solid rock with that amount of kinetic energy. The unsinkable Titanic met with a similar circumstance remember.

this is nothing compare with a disaster of MV. SPICE ISLANDER sunk in the deep sea of Nungwi in the islands of Zanzibar, about more than 800meters deep about 200 passengers died and 1,000 people together with ship are lost and not seen until today. I do consider for these poor people who travel for economic movement of daily bread while challenging their tough life against them without support from the others who sunk with costa concordia just for luxury life on cruiser ship.

It was only a matter of time that this would happen, maybe it will bring in new regulations about the design and size of the things.
Anyway who'd call spending 2 weeks with 3000 people on a boat a holiday!

The owners of this cruise ship need to pay for the damage they have done to their customers, and it is an insult to value passengers lives at £9,000 when they are a multi million pound company. PAY THE MONEY!!! It's your fault.

Looking at this picture scares the hell out of me .Such a large ship and so many people .I was thinking on going on a cruise with the wife ,but after looking at these pictures , i dont think this will happen. If one man can cause such a large ship to sink , it doesnt say much for the navigation and computers on board .Take a minute to think what it must have been like when that started to roll over , the panick in people .
The company needs to be shaken up to make sure this does not happen .It shouldnt happen .Lawsuits bring them on .Ship builders design a ship that cant sink then i`ll take a cruise.

why must one not take a ride on Costa Concordia? What ever happen is human error. When we have Titanic disasters, why not all travelers decide not to use cruise lines for flexing? So please stop writing on here discouraging others of not using Costa Concordia. Left for me alone, i will use it because that cruise is cool just like Oasis of the Sea, i use it before and i know what i am saying... be cool men
