Perseid meteor shower reaches climax

Stargazers were treated to a stunning show last night when up to 60 meteors an hour made themselves visible to the naked eye in the annual Perseid shower. The meteors are made up of dust and debris from the tail of Comet Swift-Tuttle and burn up in the Earth's atmosphere every year during July and August. The shower reached its peak on Monday night and early Tuesday morning but the spectacular display will continue until the end of August.
