Having forgotten his school`s policy on duelling, Luigi was regretting that he had accused Geno of cheating during the maths test.

I like this... not the gun... but their faces are fantastic! And the lighting/colouring is effective (not that I'm pro, I just like it)

Shows that Sony cameras have limited dynamic range, not a good advert.

No, i think it shows that you have no idea about post-processing of pictures...

Post processing ... you mean amateur CGI on a computer with a photo program... where is there any ' processing ' in that .. your comment shows you have no idea of photography I think ... !!

A good photograph tells a story and evokes emotion with the viewer. This does both. True it is a horrifying picture, you can clearly see the little boy does not want the firearm, and that he is being forced by an elderly man, presumably his grandfather to take hold of it.. Will the old man be proud when this child murders his first human being. more than likely, The moron

Whoso ever shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me , it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck , and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe unto the world because of offences ! for it must needs be that offences come , but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh . Matthew 18 v 6-7.

If this is what makes the Sony World photography awards, then we are heading for a year of #$%$ photos at the world stage of the Olympics! Where's the technical skill, the artistry. With all the city and guild programmes diminishing, and teaching of photography going down the pan, because todays camera is so much better now. But who are the people taking the photos. It looks like they all have their eyes shutTomorrow we will see its by an Elephant or a Monkey!!

        Grow up!
Yes cameras, digital ones especially are good as they have ever been.
But the camera didnt choose the settings. The photographer chose the subject. The photographer pressed the shutter at a specific moment, the moment he wanted to capture.
And need i mention, this is a documentary photograph. Not a sports photograph!

I am doing a photography degree, and its much harder then it looks.

I couldn't disagree with you more, Wayne. This is the most effective load of photos I've seen for a long time. Sometimes I get the urge to wonder if I could afford contacting the photographers and seeing how much a print is - and with this competition, I got it with a lot of the photos.

Cant say I like it. The boy looks a tad apprehensive which should not be the case if he had a good instructor.

No, he was going to shoot a police informer, and those are two undercover cops trying to prise the gun out of his hand. He is pissedoff because he wants to be a Goodfeller!

I don't understand all of the negative comments which are against this photo even being shown, and suggestions Sony have no scruples.

This shows real life. That's what photography, visual art, and any art ought to do. That's what is healthy for the soul, whether life affirming positivity is the subject, or just a hard truth from the earth.

Gosh, so many people who think they appreciate culture and art, and know a good photo, for example, have yet even to come close to reaching true, actual mental adolescence. Grow up. Drop your shiny mags and get a real life. The earth is not a shiny mag, even if, though, your mind has transformed into one.

I'm grateful for seeing this photo.

Don't let the diabolical nerds of glory and the delicious hide the truth of earth, if possible.

If these are the short list all I can say is that photography today isnt what it used to be ... !!!
There was a time when technical details would accompany a picture .. ie; film type, camera, lens, exposure etc etc ... I guess they dont do that now because its all digital and there is no talent or skill required anymore in taking a good picture, all a person needs to be nowadays is a machine operator as the cameras do it all for them and what we see for the most part is basically a form of CGI only on a smaller scale ...

As a trained dyed in the wool PHOTOGRAPHER ie; film, darkroom etc etc, I cant help but be a little cynical and wonder if these people could have produced these pictures with a normal film camera ..??

I've now looked at all and the one I do hope wins is this. No cut N paste here at all. And I hope the boy gets this picture and never holds a Shotgun ever again.
