Horror moment dad-of-two breaks leg in six places after being thrown from high-speed waterslide

This is the horrifying moment a dad-of-two broke his leg in six places - after hurtling down a Turkish waterslide and being thrown into a swimming pool wall.

Des Jarvis, 46, was on holiday in Turkey when he went down the chute and was catapulted into the wall of the pool.

He needed five major operations to save his limb from a bone infection after smashing his right leg.

Doctors were then forced to break his leg in another three places before fitting 18 metal pins and rods.

And he has now been left with his right leg two inches shorter than his left, as surgeons had to remove part of his tibia.

Des had taken a ride down the dangerous chute at the Didim Beach Resort in Altinkum, Turkey, which sees swimmers thrown from the exit into a pool which appear far too short for the speed of the slide.

Now nearly two years after the horrific smash, the window fitter has been told he will never work again.

Des, of Peterborough, Cambs, says despite the horrific injuries he still hasn't received compensation from holiday firm First Choice.

He said: ‘I am now a recluse but First Choice couldn't care less. I cant sleep, go out or do anything and I am in constant pain. But all they want to do is sweep it under the carpet.

‘I have lost two inches of my height off my right leg as they had to cut all the infected bone away. And now my leg is in three pieces.

‘Its disgusting and my life is now is a constant battle against pain and emotion.

‘And to add insult to injury, I've been told that I will never be able to go back and do the job I love. It's all I have known for 24 years and now its over.

‘I have no life anymore, I can't go out, get dressed, socialise nothing. It's just like being in purgatory but with added pain. I don't want anyone else to go through this hell.’

Des had splashed out more than £5,000 to take girlfriend Nikki, 42, and their four children to Turkey for the holiday of a lifetime.

But he was left with a gaping open wound after he went down the water slide and shot out the other end into a wall.

After the accident, which was captured on camera, medics operated in a desperate bid to save his leg after Des contracted a potentially fatal bone infection.

He had to endure a number of painful procedures, and last October had a cage fitted around the open wound with a metal plate and screws.

Des is still in constant pain and it is yet to be decided whether he will be able to keep his limb, but doctors have warned that he will walk with a limp for the rest of his life.

Des revealed he is still trying to get compensation from travel company First Choice.

He added: ‘The holiday company have robbed me of my kids childhoods.

‘I can't go and play football with my son or take them for days out or go to parents evenings. It¹s a living hell and first choice have washed their hands of me.

‘If their chief exec spent one minute in my body they would do the honourable thing and pay me some compensation.

‘I have to live in my pyjamas every minute of everyday because I can't put any trousers over the cage.

‘I don't have a sex life anymore and my girlfriend has to work as my virtual carer, administering antibiotic and washing me. Its demeaning.

‘I used to love getting out and about and doing exercise and now I can't do anything. I look like Iron Man and I fee my life is now like living in a cage.’

Since his accident a new video has emerged of another holidaymaker having a near miss on the same slide where Des was injured.

And it has also emerged that five other tourists have been injured on the same slide in question.

Des' solicitor Nick Harris, of Simpson Millar, said: ‘It's bordering on madness that despite Des's accident and other similar accidents the slide remains in use.

‘It's almost as though someone must be killed before anything will be done. If someone comes down the slide head first they will have no chance.’

Des' case is being featured on BBC1's Holiday Hit Squad, where experts claim the slide is flouting local health and safety standards.

A spokeswoman for First Choice said: ‘We are sorry to hear about the injuries sustained by Mr Jarvis, whilst he was holidaying at the Wasd Didim Beach Hotel in Turkey in 2012.

‘As the matter in question is currently subject to a legal process, it would be inappropriate of us to comment any further at this time. Our legal team is in direct contact with Mr Jarvis solicitors.

‘We would like to reassure customers that incidents of this type are very rare, the health and safety of our customers is of paramount importance to First Choice and we operate the strictest quality standards across all of our hotels.’
