PM: World Must Not Ignore Plight Of Somalia

Prime Minister David Cameron has warned global leaders that the world will "pay a price" if it fails to help Somalia tackle terrorism, piracy and hunger.

Opening an international conference in London on the crisis-stricken east African state, the Mr Cameron said: "These problems in Somalia don't just affect Somalia. They affect us all.

"In a country where there is no hope, chaos, violence and terrorism thrive. Pirates are disrupting vital trade routes and kidnapping tourists.

"Young minds are being poisoned by radicalism, breeding terrorism that is threatening the security of the whole world.

"If the rest of us just sit back and look on, we will pay a price for doing so."

Representatives of more than 40 countries have gathered for the high-level international conference amid fears Somalia is becoming the new breeding ground for terrorism.

Among the senior figures attending the Lancaster House event are United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton , as well as members of Somalia's Western-backed transitional government.

Mr Cameron said he hoped the conference would mark a "turning point" for Somalia and put in place the "building blocks" of a more stable nation.

Somalia has had transitional administrations for the past seven years, but has not had a functioning central government since 1991, when warlords overthrew a long-time dictator and turned on each other, plunging the nation into two decades of chaos.

Mr Cameron said nations must help Somalis "create a representative government", ahead of the expiry of the transitional authority's mandate in August.

He said Britain, Denmark, Norway, the United Arab Emirates and the Netherlands were setting up a local stability fund to provide support from previously neglected regions - including those emerging from terrorist control.

At the same the UK was providing a further £51m over the next three years to support Somalia refugees who fled the country for neighbouring Kenya and Ethiopia, Mr Cameron added.

Hopes for progress have risen in recent months after troops from the UN-backed African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) succeeded in driving the Islamist al Shabaab group from the capital, Mogadishu.

They were further bolstered by reports that the al Shabaab stronghold of Baidoa in the southwest of the country has fallen to troops from neighbouring Ethiopia and Somali government forces.

The UN Security Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to increase the Amisom presence from a maximum of 12,000 troops to 17,700 while increasing funding and expanding its area of operations.

Nevertheless, al Shabaab remains in control of much of the country, and earlier this month it underscored its commitment to violent extremism by publicly declaring its affiliation to al Qaeda .

Mr Cameron said Amisom needed to be able to put al Shabaab "permanently into retreat".

A recent report by the Royal United Services Institute think tank estimated that there were currently around 200 foreign fighters in training camps in the country - with around a quarter of them coming from Britain.

The report echoed a warning made by MI5 director general Jonathan Evans in 2010 that it was "only a matter of time" before there were terrorist attacks on the streets of Britain inspired by those fighting in Somalia.

With the London Olympics just months away, Mr Cameron has acknowledged that the security threat from al Shabaab was "real" and "substantial".

Mr Cameron also called for further action against the Somali pirates, calling for the creation of an international taskforce on ransoms.

"Let's set the ultimate ambition of stopping these payments because in the end they only ensure that crime pays," he said.

Cameron says.."the world will pay a price" No, wrong we the tax payer will be paying the price, AGAIN....Where is all the money going to come from! Amazing, that you can magic the money up from somewhere, when you want send aid to someone or start another war.

Same old, same old Jen. The fact that this country is a mess, doesn't come into the equation. Political figures just want to get their name in the history books, and to hell with their own people. Cameron = Blair. Nothing changes

Hello.. Yes you can say that again! Hey, as long as they're alright, they don't care about the rest of us.

You've gotta love David Cameron. He's busy crusading accross the world 'saving' nations like Somalia, Libya, Afghanistan etc ... oblivious to the fact that his own nation is a complete fu**ing shambles.

Its too late there are already 400,000 Somalians in Britain now. Today I briefly spoke to a Somalian woman who was collecting her brand new car from a dealership. She told me she had five children (one was disabled) and has been GIVEN a six bedroom house in Worthing. She was at the car dealership to collect her FREE car as she could qualify under the Motorbility scheme for her disabled daughter. She also told me she sends her husband £150 pw to help him.She also said she loves England and is very grateful.
My Father (90) decorated war hero, paid into the system ALL his life has been turned down for a chair lift because of the cuts. Now before I'm accused of racism (which its blatantly not) Is this really fair ? Also today, Cameron has increased aid etc to Somalia at the stroke of a pen by £250m.

I work for a travel company and the Somali's regularly come in to spend their 500.00 pound charity travel vouchers. One man said he could buy flight seats far cheaper on the internet and offered to sell me the vouchers for less than their face value........Strange how nearly all Somali families have disabled children, isn't it?

why don't we ship them all back to Somalia?

I'm sorry, but our "help" is the primary cause of Somalia's "failure" to begin with. All of the BILLIONS of pounds in financial "aid" we have sent to the African continent, through the many, long decades has been appropriated by a multitude of warlords and despost and used to buy guns, bullets and aid in the subjugation of their respective populations.

What about our failed state as in :-
The UK will be contributing to this Euro pay out, either directly or indirectly !
We will be paying out thru either the IMF or the Euro Bank up to the tune of up to £50 billion !
Of course this will not be included in the government claim that we only spend overseas each and every year up to £10.4 billion.
How this figure is obtained I will never know, the wars in Afghan, Iraq and Libya alone amounts to this much.
It costs the UK tax payer year on year for all their “donations” to over 90 different countries wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Somalia, Kenya, Syria, the EU, Immigration, Support for their families in their country of Origin, Treatment for all their dependents on the NHS when we have to wait up to 2 years for treatment, 5 star hotels for immigrants, £40million per day to the EU.
The total is upwards of £800billion every year !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry all this expense should be re-channelled into the UK for us with our Pensioners, Jobs, Councils, Education, Roads, Police, Law System, Jails, Jobs, Manufacturing, NHS Doctors, Nurses, Mortgages, Financial, Moral, Immigration, Retirement homes, the UK’s infrastructure-transport, Disability Payments, an obligation to a System of Justice that works for the UK Citizens MUST come first and an obligation to a System of Justice that works in that order.
I will be voting for the BNP in all future elections whether local or national.
One just has to mention colour, immigration, overseas donations and one is branded a racist.
Sorry the race card doesn’t work for me anymore.
Out of the EU, Stop Immigration, Stop Overseas spending, then we can think about other countries including the Europe when we once again may be financially viable!
Yes unfortunately this is what we have now degraded to.
We are so invisible to our government, except when collection of taxes arrives, not only this one but to the current and previous 5 terms of governments that we are dying through sickness, starvation and the cold.
But does our government care ?
      No way.

This is why I will be voting for the BNP in a vain attempt to regain our standard of living before the immigration and aid sickness of overseas spending gripped our once profitable country !
Sorry the accusations thrown at the BNP regarding the racial ticket doesn't work for me any more.

      Help us first Ca-MORON !

Scameron is so concerned about some primitives from 6000 miles away, yet so unconcerned about the wishes of the British people to have a referendum on EU membership !
Instead he rules our country with 3 whips like some Somali war lord.
I think he's got his priorities mildly wrong. In effect he's being a do gooder to these people as a 'look at the lovely Cameron' publicity stunt & at the same time sticking 2 fingers up to the UK population on a vital issue.

Dear Mr Scameron may I remind you, you were elected to serve us !

I saw on Sky news this am, Somalis are getting Brit passports when here, then going back to somalia & getting radicalised & trained into how to blow us up when they come back here !

My father in law fought in the Navy in WWII. He reckons all it did was to make this country a better place for foreigners to come & live.

What would Churchill make of this country now ?
I'm not even sure he'd recognise it as still being a separate country any more !

If we set our Navy on the pirates to protect our shipping as we should have done years ago & didn't let the benefit seeking Somalis come here, there'd be no problem would there, or is that too simple.

It's called Britain Dave. You keep on your do-gooding ego trip with Cleggy and there will be a price to pay. Think about that with your other Eton Trifles.

World must help failed state Somalia? No we mustn't. We MUST sort ourselves out first. Charity begins at home. How about paying off all the debt first before we start handing out out to other countries? We are all scratching about paying for food with coupons, keeping the heating off because we can't afford the bills and trying to make our clothes last that little bit longer as we can't afford new ones. It's about time some common sense came into the thinking from Westminster please.

We MUST ignore the plight of the Somali's as they don't seem to get the message which is DON'T HAVE KIDS YOU CANNOT FEED OR PROVIDE FOR. It's not rocket salad!

What is it with this cretin? He spends most of his time (and our money) sorting out everybody elses problems. Perhaps someone should tell him that he was elected prime minister of this country and not of numerous middle east countries. He keeps telling us we have no money to spare, he's cutting nhs, police etc; to save money, and then he starts throwing it by the handful to countries which will use it to attack this country. This man is incompetant, his megolamania is reaching dangerous levels. I wouldn't be surprised to see him trying to change water into wine next. He really nees to go..........and never come back. Any credibility that the conservatives had has been destroyed by this oik and his pals in government.

What about the poor of Britain, they are about to be denied basic health care by the Tories plan to privitise the NHS to enrich their rich friends!

They have reasoned that it is cheaper to pay for pauper burials for the poor then to maintain the NHS!

Somalia is similar to the Eurozone, where money is concerned. A bottomless pit. Aid will disappear into the hands of the corrupt. Cameron plans his next career move to a posting at the UN or the EU at the expense of British taxpayers. The Somalians need 'education..education...education' and condoms.
