    Polish aeroplane makes emergency landing

An aeroplane was forced to make a crash landing at Warsaw airport on Tuesday after problems with its landing gear.

The aircraft which was due to land at 1.35pm local time had circled above Poland's Frederic Chopin International airport for an hour and dropped fuel before coming down in a belly landing at 2.40pm.

Live TV footage from the incident shows the passenger jet landing on its belly, with a few sparks flying as it struck the runway.

The Boeing 767 carrying 230 people onboard had taken off from New Jersey's Newark airport.

Warsaw airport was closed to all other flights, nearby streets were cleared, and a landing strip was especially prepared for the crash landing.

"All safety procedures worked perfectly fine and, thanks to this, nobody was injured," said Leszek Chorzewski, a spokeswoman for the LOT Polish Airlines flight.

An investigation into the incident is underway.

What crash? that was a planned emergency landing skillfully flown. Crashes are unplanned and kill people
      • Simon Templer 6 months ago
Crashes don't necessarily kill people! And the plane landed on it's belly, not the wheels that it was designed to land on. And I'm sure the scraping of it's belly on the runway would not be regarded as a normal landing. You can have an engine failure and still land on the wheels as an emergency landing, but on the fuselage? And I don't think it was planned in advance was it? I agree it was planned once the emergency was clear. OK. let's call it a scrape landing instead of crash landing! :-)

PS I didn't give you a thumbs down as I sort of get what you're trying to say! Even though I don't entirely agree with you!

Looks as if it was a brilliant landing under the circumstances!!!
      • Jam 6 months ago
Have seen the video footage now and it looks as if it was smoother landing than if the gear had actaully come down!!! The captain sure earned his bread today.

Why some d'k head gave you a thumbs down, god only knows.
      • Simon Templer 6 months ago
You're right Granny, I've been wondering that too! Let's all ignore it as it's obviously meant to provoke a reaction. Mindless cretin whoever it was!

As an Airline Pilot, I can tell you that that was one hell of a miraculous landing! One of a pilots worst nightmares and they pulled it off. Steve below. You don't know what you are talking about. Fuel or hardly any fuel on board, that is one of the most dangerous manoeuvres you can do. Normally the fuselage breaks up with many fatalities and causalities .
Yes James, as a pilot myself I have to agree.
      • THE COLONEL 6 months ago
So you're a pilot, James? Of a model plane I presume. 'One of the most dangerous manoeuvres you can do'. Rubbish. Go play with your radio control. There was no special skill involved - not as if it was an emergency crash landing - there was loads of time to prepare, select a runway with length and put her down gently.

you're right james, so many stories where this has happened upon landing.

I'd fly with this pilot any day - what a fantastic job he did. Ex British Caledonian Cabin Staff member.

Very good kudos to the pilots, imagine the pressure they felt having to do that with so many people's lives in their hands. Well done.

Congratulations to all involved. The evacuation of nearby population centres, preperation of the runway, the pilot circuling to use fuel, text book. Well done all.
