Manchester United fought back from 3-0 down to draw at Chelsea in the Premier League.
After dominating for much of the first half, United's poor run at Stamford Bridge looked certain to continue as Jonny Evans put Daniel Sturridge's cross into his own net.
Chelsea's second goal came less than 30 seconds after the restart - Fernando Torres running clear on the right before whipping in a perfect cross for Juan Mata to lash straight past David De Gea.
Chelsea were 3-0 up less than 5 minutes later when David Luiz headed Mata's free kick against Rio Ferdinand's shoulder and into the net.
United's fortunes turned when they were awarded two penalties inside 10 minutes. The first looked harsh as Sturridge was judged to have knocked down Patrice Evra. Chelsea boss Andre Villas Boas threw a bottle at the advertising boards in disgust as Rooney blasted the penalty past Petr Cech.
Howard Webb pointed to the spot again when Danny Welbeck tripped over the leg of Branislav Ivanovic. Rooney went to Cech's left this time, to put United within a goal of a remarkable comeback.
The champions equalised six minutes from time when Cech parried Rooney's shot to Ryan Giggs, he crossed for an unmarked Javier Hernandez to head straight through Cech.
United are now two points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City.
Fourth placed Chelsea are a point above Newcastle, who moved up to fifth with a victory in the lunchtime game.
Substitute Papiss Cisse scored on his debut to give the Magpies a 2-1 win over Aston Villa.
Fellow Senegalese striker Demba Ba put Newcastle ahead after 30 minutes after team mate Ryan Taylor had been injured in the box.
Taylor's treatment led to substantial first-half injury time and Villa used it to their advantage.
Robbie Keane scored the equaliser just before the break, his third goal since joining on loan from Los Angeles Galaxy.
Cisse, who came on for the injured Leon Best after 14 minutes, won the game midway through the second half with a shot from the edge of the penalty area.
