Witherspoon Pays \$100 Fine For Misconduct Rap

A dashboard-camera video of Reese Witherspoon's recent disorderly conduct arrest, including her false claim that she was pregnant, has appeared online.

The Legally Blonde actress was arrested after a traffic stop in Georgia on April 19 and claims she "panicked" as she had had "one too many" glasses of wine.

During an interview with ABC, Witherspoon repeatedly apologised and said: "I have no idea what I was saying that night.

"I literally panicked. I said all kinds of crazy things. I told them I was pregnant. I'm not pregnant."

Municipal Court of Atlanta Deputy Solicitor Ronda Graham said in a statement on Friday that Witherspoon had pleaded no contest and paid a \$100 (£64) fine, resolving the case.

The actress was detained after she refused to remain in her car while her husband, Jim Toth, was given a breath test.

The situation quickly escalates and the Georgia state trooper handcuffs the 37-year-old star.

"You better not arrest me! Are you kidding me?" she asks in the video, initially obtained by TMZ.

    "Nope," he responds.

She protests again, "I'm an American citizen!" The trooper leans toward her and says he told her to stay in the car.

As Witherspoon is taken out of view in handcuffs, she can be heard asking: "Do you know my name sir?"

When he says he does not need to, she asks: "You don't need to know my name?"

He says: "Not quite yet". She adds: "Oh really. OK, you're about to find out who I am."

The trooper responds: "That's fine. I'm not real worried about you, ma'am. I done told you how things worked. You want to get out and get up in my investigation, that's OK."

As the trooper returns to Toth, he tells him: "I tried."

Toth says "I'm sorry", and the trooper adds, "I absolutely 100% tried".

Toth then tries to put some distance between him and his wife's outburst.

"I had nothing to do with that," Toth tells the trooper.

    "I know," he responds.

Toth was later charged with drunk driving and will appear in court on May 23, while Witherspoon will appear a day before to answer charges of disorderly conduct.

"There are so many lessons learned," the actress said in the ABC interview.

"When a police officer tells you to stay in the car, you stay in the car," she said. "I learned that for sure. I learned a lot."

In a statement shortly after the incident, Witherspoon said: "I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said.

"It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse.

"I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I'm very sorry for my behaviour."

The Hollywood star married her husband in 2011 and they have a son together. Witherspoon also has two children with her first husband, actor Ryan Phillippe.

She won an Oscar for her work in the 2005 film about country music star Johnny Cash, Walk The Line, in which she played his wife, June Carter Cash.
