Wayne Rooney marked the 500th senior game of his career by scoring twice as Manchester United beat Liverpool 2-1 at Old Trafford - but the match will also be remembered for Luis Suarez's refusal to shake hands with Patrice Evra before kick-off.
It was their first meeting since Suarez served an eight-match ban for racially abusing Evra when the sides met at Anfield in October.
The Manchester United captain offered his hand when the teams lined-up before the start, but Suarez refused to shake it - and Rio Ferdinand, who was standing near Evra, then refused to shake hands with Suarez.
The incident proved to be far more of a talking point than anything that happened in a lacklustre first half when the game got underway.
United's Paul Scholes had the best chance that fell to either side, but his header - after a terrific passing move - was directed straight at Pepe Reina in the visitors' goal.
The game turned in United's favour straight after the break, with Wayne Rooney scoring twice in the first five minutes of the second-half. His first goal came from a Ryan Giggs corner from the right-hand side. The ball landed at Rooney's feet and he hit it on the half-volley, into the roof of the net, from six yards out.
Rooney - who was playing the 500th senior game of his career with Everton, Manchester United and England - doubled the lead after being put through by Antonio Valencia.
Luis Suarez pulled a goal back 10 minutes from time when he pounced on a loose ball after Charlie Adam floated a free-kick into the penalty area.
Liverpool nearly salvaged a a point in stoppage time - but Glen Johnson's long-range effort produced a stunning save from United keeper David De Gea.
The champions' victory takes them back to the top of the table - a point ahead of Manchester City who visit Aston Villa on Sunday.
In other Premier League matches, Arsenal moved up to fourth after Chelsea lost 2-0 at Everton, and the Gunners won 2-1 at Sunderland.
Thierry Henry scored Arsenal's winner in the last Premier League game of his loan spell from New York Red Bulls.
Blackburn beat QPR 3-2, while bottom side Wigan closed the gap on Bolton with a 2-1 win at the Reebok Stadium.
