What they said about the results

Reuters - Friday, May 2 02:38 pm

LONDON (Reuters) - Here is a selection of reactions to the local elections.

DAVID CAMERON, CONSERVATIVE PARTY LEADER

"I think this is a very big moment for the Conservative Party, but I don't want anyone to think that we would deserve to win an election just on the back of a failing Government.

"I think these results are not just a vote against Gordon Brown and his Government. I think they are a vote of positive confidence in the Conservative Party."

HARRIET HARMAN, LABOUR PARTY DEPUTY LEADER

"These are disappointing results and we recognise the difficult economic context with people feeling the pinch.

"We are determined to listen and are confident to take the country forward."

On the increased share of the Conservative vote: "What it will do is make people look at what the Tories are actually offering. What is their alternative? I think they haven't come under serious scrutiny."

ROBERT WORCESTER, FOUNDER OF OPINION POLLSTERS MORI

"If the economic crisis continues through 2010, Brown's dead in the water."

NICK CLEGG, LIBERAL DEMOCRAT LEADER

"We are regaining momentum. Politics is very much on the move again. Everything is up for grabs.

"It is only the second time in our history in the post-war period that we have overtaken Labour as a share of the vote."

"There is a great deal to play for. We are on the front foot."

ERIC PICKLES, CONSERVATIVE LOCAL GOVERNENT SPOKESMAN

"The ship of state is heading towards the rocks."

UNIVERSITIES MINISTER JOHN DENHAM:

"We will come back from this and win the next general election."
