Chile's Chaiten Volcano is shown spewing ash and smoke into the air for hundreds of kilometers over Argentina's Patagonia Plateau in this Envisat's Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) satellite image, acquired on May 5, 2008 and released by European Space Agency (ESA) on May 8, 2008. Chile evacuated the last of a small group of military personnel and civilians from the vicinity of an erupting volcano in its remote Patagonian south before dawn on Thursday, after it spat a surge of fiery material, officials said.
