Sandy's Pet Victims Saved From Being Put Down

Dozens dogs and cats that were displaced by Superstorm Sandy have arrived in San Diego following a cross-country flight to save them from being put down.

Some 60 animals were taken to a shelter in Rancho Santa Fe after landing in California on Saturday.

A spokeswoman for the Helen Woodward Animal Centre said the dogs and cats were facing being euthanised at New York and New Jersey animal shelters that had lost power when the storm struck last month.

Jessica Gercke said her organisation, a "no-kill shelter", approached Southwest Airlines and San Diego's SeaWorld to help rescue the animals.

She said a pilot and crew donated their time, BP paid for the fuel, and animal handlers from SeaWorld accompanied the pets on the chartered flight.

Gerke said the centre will vaccinate, spay and neuter the animals before putting them up for adoption.
