Saracens, Edinburgh And Cardiff Blues All Progress In The Heineken Cup

The quarter-final line-up in rugby union's Heineken Cup is now in place after Saracens, Edinburgh and Cardiff Blues all reached the last eight by winning their final pool matches.

Saracens were made to work hard for the win in Treviso that secured top spot in Pool 5, as the Italian side led twice with tries from Robert Barbieri and Tomasso Iannone.

The Premiership champions responded each time, with lock Mouritz Botha and winger David Strettle both going over, while Owen Farrell kicked 16 points as Saracens won 26-20.

The result guaranteed Sarries a home tie in the quarter-finals, while in the same group, Biarritz thrashed Ospreys to claim the runners-up spot.

Iain Balshaw was among the try scorers, and there was a hat-trick for Takudzwa Ngweny, as Biarritz won 36-5 - but their hopes of progressing rested on the results of the final games in Pool 2.

Cardiff Blues and Edinburgh started the day level on 17 points each, and knew they would both qualify if they both won.

In a pulsating game at Cardiff City Stadium, the Blues led twice against Racing Metro - with tries from Lloyd Williams and Alex Cuthburt.

Each time they were pegged back with the French side grabbing two tries of their own, and Racing led 24-23 at the break.

Defeat for the Blues could have meant missing out on the quarter-finals completely - but a second try for Alex Cuthbert proved to be the crucial score in the second half, as Cardiff won by 36 points to 30.

Their failure to get a bonus point opened the door for Edinburgh who would win the group if they beat London Irish and scored four tries in the process - and they did just that.

Tim Visser and Jim Thompson went over in the first half, with Netani Talei and Lee Jones adding to those tries after the break as Edinburgh won 34-11 to pip Cardiff to top spot and earn themselves a home tie in the last eight.

    Quarter-Finals:

    Munster v Ulster

    Leinster v Cardiff Blues

    Edinburgh v Toulouse

    Saracens v Clermont Auvergne

Ties to be played on 6th, 7th and 8th April.
