Sean Penn Slams 'Colonialist' UK Over Falklands

Hollywood actor Sean Penn has weighed into the ongoing Falkland Islands dispute, and taken Argentina's side in the matter.

He urged Britain to join proposed UN sponsored talks over what he called "the Malvinas Islands of Argentina", and went on to criticise the UK, saying: "The world today is not going to tolerate any ludicrous and archaic commitment to colonialist ideology."

Penn made the comments in his capacity as UN ambassador at large for Haiti after meeting with Argentine President Cristina Kirchner.

"I understand that it's a very sensitive moment (in terms) of diplomacy related to the Malvinas (Argentina's name for the Falklands), for Argentina and the United Kingdom," said Penn .

"Although I am here in the capacity of an Ambassador at large for Haiti I do want to say, I feel the responsibility to say, that I support all diplomatic communications that must happen, and must be the only way in which this is resolved."

Britain has refused to negotiate as long as Falklanders want to remain part of the British realm, and is increasing its military defences ahead of the 30th anniversary of Argentina's failed effort to seize the islands.

HMS Dauntless, one of the Navy's most advanced new warships, is preparing for deployment to the area in the South Atlantic.

The South American nation took the case to the United Nations , where foreign minister Hector Timerman criticised the UK, saying the islands represent "the last refuge of a declining empire".

Britain's envoy to the UN, Mark Lyall-Grant, responded, saying that the claims were "manifestly absurd," adding: "Nothing in the UK's defence posture has changed in recent months or years. The only thing that has changed is the politics of Argentina."

Prince William was also criticised by some Argentine groups as he began a tour of duty on the islands as an RAF search and rescue pilot earlier this month.

Has Sean Penn ever visited the Falklands? I have and there was very little evidence of the military being around except for Friday/Saturday nights when they came into Stanley for a boose up. The people of Stanley I mixed with and there were a few had stories of the landing and the help given by locals to the British Troops when they arrived. They do not want Argentina there. It is nothing to do with Oil. The people there are more patriotic than we are here in the UK! UK thats a laugh with Wales and Scotland have their own governments. The passports issued have the name Falklands on them. The currency and stamps have Falklands on them. I was not in the military nor working there. Prince William is there to do a job and its very much needed. Many ships fish around the islands and its a very dangerous job some loose their lives or are badly injured so getting to medical help by helicopter is the quickest way.

Who cares if a handful of Falklanders are more patriotic than we are, does that justify the deaths of how many British and Argentinian soldiers, costing how much taxpayers money ? Being patriotic is a mental illness anyway, who cares what colour you are, who cares what language you speak, who cares what flag you carry, we are all human beings and we are getting mugged off by these idiots in power.

Ok then while your on the subject of giving land to people why not hand Hawaii back to the Hawaians?
Then you could always give the USA back to the Apache, Souix, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Navaho, Cree, Chipewyan, Aleuts, Alutiiq, Cupik, Yupik, and Inuit, You could even get the ball rolling youself by giving your California home to the Miwok assuming you can find any that were not wiped out but gold hungry yanks.
Or on the other hand you could shut your dumb trap & get back to making third rate movies you sanctimonius idiot.

Argentina cannot hand back their country to the indigenous people because they were butchered in the only documented genocide in South America. The ruling classes of both the Aztec and Mayan cultures certainly got a raw deal, but the ordinary people and their descendants are still there. Not so in Argentina. It was genocide, making Argentina the refuge of choice for fleeing Nazis.

I always thought colonialism was when a country takes over a country from it's inhabitants, but as the Falklands were not inhabited it cannot be considered to be colonized.

A Hollywood Film Star has spoken - We must comply.
''F'' Off Mr Penn and just concern yourself with the plastic world you inhabit.

Perhaps Mr. Penn should turn his attention to the way in which the Argentinians have traditionally treated the original inhabitants of Argentina, whose condition is desperate. It's bettrer than it used to be (they were slaughtered wholesale), now all they have to put up with is land confiscation and eviction. An actor is no better qualified (and often worse qualified) to adjudicate a dispute of this sort than a penguin. He should shut up.

Of course Mr Penn is fully conversant with the history of British involvement with the Falkland Islands since 1527. Someone ask Mr Penn who the islands are named for ? Please Mr Penn, don't get involved you are an actor not a historian

Talk about colonialism- why should an American dictate to the rest of the world what should happen? The people of the Falklands should be allowed to decide their own fate.

What does Sean Penn know?? He's lived a sheltered life in LaLa land since before the Falklands War, he is surrounded by "Yes" men, probably hasn't read a newspaper in years and was just told a snippet of the situation by one of his house servants, put 2+2 together cand came up with 64!!

USA has the largest and most significant case of Ethnic Cleansing carried out by Colonials in the history of the World!! How about USA gives a few States back to the Native Americans?!?!? Oh you I forgot you can't, you killed them all!!

      Pot calling the kettle black!!!!

This comment, like many more from Mr. Penn, just show how dangerous the results of "method acting" can be (in his case, living every moment as Jeff Spicoli when shooting "Fast Times at Ridgemont High"). Idiot.
