Shark Attack: Surfer Dies Off Reunion Island

A surfer has died after a shark attack off the French island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean.

Local Alexandre Rassiga, 21, was around 100m off a popular beach in Trois-Bassins when the shark struck, biting off his leg.

Other surfers managed to haul the victim back to the beach, but the paramedic's attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Mr Rassiga had suffered a heart attack.

Two other fatal shark attacks happened off Reunion in June and September last year, leading local officials to authorise monitoring of the island's beaches.

The attack on Monday took place just an hour after monitoring of the beach where Mr Rassiga was surfing had finished.

Local authorities have yet to identify the type of shark responsible.
