New Guinness Brewery Outside Dublin

Drinks giant Diageo has announced a major shake-up of its Irish business, including the landmark Guinness brewery in Dublin.

The firm is to spend £520m building a new brewery outside Dublin and renovating the present one at St James's Gate.

Part of the St James's site is to be sold but it will continue to produce beer for the UK and Ireland.

Under the plans two smaller breweries in Kilkenny and Dundalk will close.

Around 250 jobs will go as a result of the changes.

The Guinness Storehouse adjoining the St James's brewery is one of Dublin's most popular tourist attractions in the Irish Republic.

Guinness was first brewed on the premises in 1759, and up to four million pints of the stout are still produced there each day.

The 60-acre site on the south side of the River Liffey is estimated to be worth more around £790m.

Diageo currently employs 2,500 workers at its brewing facilities in Dublin, Dundalk, Kilkenny and Waterford.

The firm's other popular brands include Kilkenny and Harp beers.
