New London mayor Boris Johnson handed his New York counterpart a novelty London Underground shirt as the pair met to discuss ways of combating crime.
In an exchange of gifts Mayor Bloomberg was first to present Boris Johnson with a Tiffany box containing a crystal Big Apple paperweight.
As Mr Johnson handed over the plastic wrapped shirt he quipped: "This is not the most handsomely wrapped present."
The London mayor welcomed Michael Bloomberg to City Hall where they are embarking on scheduled talks.
Law and order is to be the main focus, with Mr Johnson set to discover those strategies adopted in New York.
Mayor Bloomberg has been credited with cutting crime in New York by 20% during his initial term in office.
The new London mayor has already pledged to reduce crime levels in the capital and cut youth violence.
During his campaign, he promised to recruit 440 new police community support officers to patrol the Tube and train network funded by cuts in the Transport for London publicity budget.
He also aims to introduce airport-style hand-held scanners and knife arches at rail stations.
Earlier this week Mr Johnson announced an alcohol ban on public transport in London to improve safety and curb anti-social behaviour.
The ban will come into effect on June 1.
